Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa junior All-American Ryan Pore registered two goals and the Golden Hurricane scored three times in the second half to get past Vanderbilt, 4-2, in Missouri Valley Conference play at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.
Playing on a rain-soaked field, Tulsa (6-3-2, 2-1-1 MVC) and Vanderbilt (6-5-2, 2-2 MVC) battled through the elements in a highly contested game that featured 32 fouls, five yellow cards and one red card.
After talking a 2-1 lead into halftime, Vanderbilt's defense stepped up and managed to keep the Golden Hurricane off the board for the first 20 minutes of the second half. VU goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni made several outstanding saves to keep the Commodores in the lead.
However, Tulsa tied the contest at 2-2 when sophomore Cary Wicker played a ball from just on the other side of midfield into TU's attacking third, where classmate Brian McCurdy centered the pass and tapped the ball to a wide-open Lawson Vaughn on the left side of the penalty box. Vaughn dribbled in about three yards and fired a shot into the middle of the net from eight yards out at 65:02.
A little over nine minutes later, Pore produced his second goal of the game, and fifth goal in the last two contests, when he scored an unassisted goal from the right side at 74:03, and gave Tulsa a 3-2 advantage.
Four minutes later, Vandy's Brady Hyde received a red card after a hard foul on Vaughn, and forced the Commodores to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
Junior Daniel Wasson gave the Hurricane some breathing room when he beat Schoeni in a one-v-one battle and scored at 84:41 off an assist from freshman Todd Goddard.
The first half started out on a solid note for Tulsa as Pore got the Golden Hurricane rolling with the game's first goal just 0:34 into the opening half when he nailed a pass from teammate Daniel Wasson from the right side of the field into the top left side of the net.
However, Vanderbilt answered with a pair of goals off corner kicks to take the lead for the first time. Vandy's first goal came at 20:03 when Justin Moreland headed in Pat Ryan's corner kick from the right side of the field to tie the game. A little over nine minutes later on a corner kick from the same side as the first score, Josh Medcalf corralled a loose ball on the left side and nailed a low shot past TU junior goalkeeper Brad Lowyns at 29:23.
