Five Tulsa Tennis Players Garner All-WAC Honors

Dustin Taylor, who acquired his second all-conference singles honor, was named to the all-WAC singles first team.

Tulsa, Okla. - Five Tulsa men's and women's tennis players garnered 2004 Western Athletic Conference Singles and Doubles Team accolades, following a vote by the league's head coaches.

The TU men's team completed the regular season with a 12-14 overall record, while the women posted a 16-8 mark. Now both teams are awaiting the announcement of the NCAA Men's and Women's Championship field of 64 teams, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 5th.

In men's action, Dustin Taylor and Alejandro Tejerina picked up all-conference honors for the Golden Hurricane. Taylor was named to the all-WAC singles and doubles first team, while Tejerina picked up first-team singles and second-team doubles accolades.

Taylor, who acquired his second all-conference singles honor, was named to the all-WAC singles first team. He posted a 12-16 singles mark, including a 5-7 record against ranked opponents. He also spent the season ranked among the nation's top-100 singles players, with his ranking ranging from No. 57 to No. 100, but is currently the No. 61 ranked player.

Tejerina also received his second all-conference singles honor, as he was named to the all-WAC singles second team. He owns a 12-16 singles mark. Tejerina entered the national polls on September 3rd as the 30th-ranked player in the nation, but fell to the No. 114 position in this week's poll.

In doubles action, Taylor and Tejerina combined to post a 19-11 doubles record, including a 5-8 mark against ranked opponents, earning them all-WAC doubles first team honors. The duo is currently the No. 43 ranked tandem in the nation.

On the women's team, Santie Delport, Daniela Muscolino and Ilona Somers picked up honors for Tulsa. Delport and Somers received second-team singles accolades, while Muscolino picked up first-team singles honors. Muscolino and Somers also tallied first-team doubles accolades.

Delport, a freshman from Grahamstown, South Africa, recorded her first all-conference honor as she was named to the all-WAC singles second team. She notched a 16-7 record in her first year as a collegiate athlete, including a 3-1 mark against WAC opponents.

Tallying her second all-WAC honor is Muscolino, who received all-conference first team singles accolades. Muscolino boasts the most singles wins for a TU women's tennis player this season, chalking up a 23-7 singles record, including a 6-2 mark against ranked opponents. She also spent the season as the top-ranked singles player for the Golden Hurricane women's team, with her ranking ranging from No. 49 to No. 75, and is currently the No. 51 ranked player in the nation.

Somers also acquired her first all-WAC accolade as she was named to the all-conference singles second team. She netted a 21-6 mark, the second-most singles wins for Tulsa this year, and was ranked as high as No. 81. Somers currently owns a No. 113 national ranking.

In doubles action, Muscolino and Somers teamed up to earn all-WAC doubles first team honors. The Tulsa pair registered an 18-14 doubles record and own a No. 46 ITA doubles ranking.
