Tulsa Men's Tennis Sweeps Texas Southern to Begin Season

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team opened their 2005 spring duel season with a 7-0 blanking of Texas Southern. TU captured the handily won the doubles point before sweeping all six singles matches.
In doubles, the number one team of Ricardo and Federico Soriano defeated Martin Knobloch and Matuesz Wodsinki, 8-3. Changing up the doubles pairings from the fall campaign, Will Gray and Lucques Maasdorp paired up to knock off Andres Carmargo and Jose Reuda 8-2. Andy Connelly and Diego Camacho rounded out the doubles action with an 8-2 victory over Aurelio Martinez and Oscar Castenada.
"The team was really excited to get started today and get into the team part of our schedule," said assistant coach Dean Orford. "They are a very young team but they played very mature."
In singles competition the rout continued as all six individuals closed out their matches in impressive fashion. Freshman Andy Connelly, who is recovering from an illness, finished the first singles match of the day, as he did not lose a game to defeat Andres Carmargo, in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0. The Golden Hurricane top three singles players were just as dominant. Achim Roth defeated Martin Knobloch, 6-1, 6-3. Ricardo Soriano posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Aurelio Martinez. Diego Camacho won his first set 6-0 over Oscar Castenada then closed out the second set by winning 6-2.
Will Gray and Lucques Maasdorp both won their matches, 6-0 6-0 and 7-5 7-5, respectively.
The Golden Hurricane men will return to action Saturday evening at 6 p.m. against Lamar.
