Tulsa, Okla. -
Tulsa senior Jillian Robbins was among the country's top-50 collegiate women's basketball players named as a preseason candidate for the Naismith Trophy presented by Cingular Wireless. The Naismith Trophy is the most prestigious national award presented annually to the men's and women's players of the year.Robbins, the Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year, averages 17.8 points per game and 12.3 rebounds per game this season. She helped lead Tulsa to its first NCAA Championship appearance in 2006, after the Golden Hurricane won their first regular season and conference tournament titles. Robbins holds the school record for points (1,678), rebounds (1,075), field goals (595), free throws (481), blocked shots (211) and double-doubles (53), and is second on the books for steals (281).
The top-50 list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The board based its preseason criteria on player performances from last season and expectations for the 2006-07 season.
In January, the Board of Selectors will narrow its preseason list to the Top 30 players in the nation. Those players, and others who distinguish themselves throughout the season, will be eligible for the final ballot in March.
Cingular Wireless will continue to set the standard in allowing fans to participate in determining this year's winner. Through the power and ease of text messaging, fan voting will account for an unprecedented 25-percent of the final results - more than any other national award.
