Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's soccer player Dominic Cervi was selected as a Conference USA Sportsmanship Award winner, as announced today by C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky.
Cervi is a three-year starter who has logged 3,136 minutes in goal, tallied four shutouts and has a 1.49 goals-against average. During a key match with Memphis in 2006, Cervi collided with Tiger forward/midfielder Tripp Harkins who suffered a concussion on the play. Cervi took the initiative to follow up on his own to check his condition.
"It is an honor to receive this award, but I just did what I felt was right," Cervi said. "I play hard, but I don't mean to play dirty. I just wanted to make sure he was alright."
Five student-athletes and one group were selected as recipients of the 2007 C-USA Sportsmanship Award, including Brie Berkowitz (East Carolina), Rusty Clayton (Memphis), Geoff Handsfield (East Carolina), Ryne Tacker (Rice), Cervi and the UCF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The conference sportsmanship awards are presented to student-athletes, coaches or teams that perform an individual act of sporting behavior or generally conduct themselves with a high degree of good sportsmanship.
