Tulsa Sweeps On Opening Day of Tulsa Invitational

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad opened its home schedule on the right foot with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-14, 30-16) sweep of New Jersey Institute of Technology, as well as a 3-0 (30-16, 30-27, 30-25) win over North Texas. The Golden Hurricane improves to 10-3 on the season, with all 10 victories coming via the sweep.
In the first match of the day, senior Fabiola Nepomuceno led the Hurricane attack with 19 kills. The outside hitter actually outhit the Highlanders, as NJIT posted only 18 kills as a team. Fellow senior Julia Silva posted her 12th double-double of the season with 40 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Nicole Boyle posted a match-high 18 digs, while junior Malorey Grove also reached double-digits with 15 digs. Freshman Emma Ridley posted 12 kills as well.
Against UNT, Nepomuceno posted 15 kills to give her seven straight double-digit kill performances. She has recorded double-figures in 10 of TU's 13 matches this season. Silva recorded another double-double with 32 assists and 13 digs to give her 11 double-doubles on the year.
Four Hurricane players posted double-figures in digs, led by Grove's 16. In addition to Silva, Boyle also recorded 13 digs, while junior Kelsey Wood added 10 digs.
Tulsa held both opponents under a .100 hitting percentage as NJIT posted a -.043 percentage and UNT finished with a .068 team percentage. Only one squad has posted a hitting percentage over .200 against the Hurricane defense this season.
Tulsa will face Grambling State at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Fans with a ticket to the TU/BYU football game on Saturday night, will receive free admission to the TU volleyball match on Saturday morning.
