Tulsa, Oklahoma - The 10th-seeded Tulsa women's basketball team begins its quest for the 2008 Conference USA Championship title when it faces seventh-seeded Memphis at 11:00 a.m. (CST) on Thursday, March 6th, in first-round action at UCF Arena in Orlando, Florida.
Tulsa (10-19, 6-10 C-USA) and Memphis (10-19, 7-9 C-USA) will meet for the second time this season and fifth time in school history, as the Tigers tallied a 72-49 victory on February 17th in Memphis to tie the overall record 2-2.
Golden Hurricane sophomore Larrissa Williams is leading the way for TU with 14.1 ppg and 9.7 rpg, while junior Chanel Johnson posts 10.5 ppg and has a team- and league-leading 82 blocks. Freshman Tatum Beer has registered team-bests of 89 assists and 52 steals, to go along with 8.8 ppg.
For the Tigers, Jessica Hall and Paris Leonard average double-digit scoring with 12.9 and 11.9 sppg, respectively. Ashley Thornton leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 per game.
Other first-round match ups include: No. 6 Marshall vs. No. 11 Tulane at 1:30 p.m., No. 5 Southern Miss vs. No. 12 UCF at 4:30 p.m., and No. 8 East Carolina vs. No. 9 Rice at 7:00 p.m. All times are Central.
UTEP captured the Conference USA regular season crown and earned the No. 1 seed after becoming the first team in C-USA history to complete the league regular season schedule without a loss (16-0), while SMU locked up the No. 2 seed, UAB the No. 3 seed and Houston the No. 4 seed. The top four seeds receive first-round byes and will begin competition on Friday, March 7th.
