Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa's men's tennis team smoked the Memphis Tigers under the hot sun on Thursday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The win moves Tulsa to 15-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Golden Hurricane quickly clinched the match with three singles victories after sweeping the doubles competition. Junior Arnau Brugues won the clinching match, dispatching Amrit Narasimhan, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. The 18th-ranked Brugues moves to 12-5 in dual play on the season with his victory. Senior Alberto Sottocorno picked up TU's first singles win of the match, defeating Charlie Ramsay without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. Sottocorno with the win is now 8-1 at the No. 5 position. Freshman Victor Kolik easily won at the No. 2 position, beating Leon Nasemann, 6-2, 6-1. Kolik is now 8-3 in dual play on season. The Golden Hurricane's fourth singles victory came from senior Andy Connelly at the No. 6 position. Connelly defeated Benedikt Fischer, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Ricardo Soriano made the score 6-0 with his victory over Jordan Smith, 6-3, 7-6 (13-11) at the No. 3 position. The last match to finish was senior Will Gray beating Michael Gaerthoeffner, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 4 position. With the victory, Gray moves to 12-5 on the spring season.
Tulsa swept the doubles portion as it did the singles competition. TU's No. 3 pair of Kolik / Sottocorno picked up the first doubles victory, downing Spencer Heflin / Smith, 8-4. Next, the No. 36-ranked duo of Brugues / Soriano gave the Hurricane the doubles point with its 8-3 win over Jimmy Khougassian / Nasemann at the No. 2 position. Competing the sweep was Tulsa's top team of Connelly / Ross Cunningham beating Narasimhan / Ramsay, 8-7 (7-5).
TU will again be action on Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m. against Hawai'I at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
