Tulsa Sweeps Creighton in Lawless Cup Regatta

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team swept Creighton, earning six first-place finishes in the third-annual Lawless Cup Regatta on Sunday at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest in Catoosa, Okla.
The Golden Hurricane claimed the Lawless Cup with a time of 7:32 in the 2,000-meter Varsity 8+ race, just 2.55 seconds ahead of the Bluejays. The title race would prove to be the closest race of the competition, as TU easily won the other five events by more than 30 seconds.
"It was a great day for the Tulsa rowing program," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "It is not often that you can sweep a team in a regatta and I am very pleased with everyone's performance today. The team accomplished their mission, and today will set us up well for the Knecht Cup in two weeks."
TU's largest win of the day came in the Lightweight 4+, as the Golden Hurricane claimed a time of 8:31, over a minute faster than Creighton's time of 9:38.76.
Tulsa also captured victories in the 2nd Varsity 8+ (7:47), the Varsity 4+ `A' (8:09), the Varsity 4+ `B' (8:56) and the Novice 4+ (8:33).
"It was nice to race at home," senior Vanessa Andrews said. "The TU fans came out and supported us in cold, drizzly conditions, and it was great to have such a good start to the season."
"Today was a huge step in the right direction for us this season," classmate Ashley Genrich added. "The team did an awesome job today and really stepped up in every event."
After the races, TU honored 15 graduating seniors and dedicated the new Tulsa rowing truck.
"It was a sad day for me in terms of watching our seniors compete at home for the last time," Harris said. "These 15 women have not only watched the program grow, they have been an instrumental part of our success, and today we honored 15 great women who have done a lot for the Tulsa rowing program."
