Tulsa Falls in Narrow, 72-69, Loss to UCF

Orlando, Florida - Kara Vaughan had a career-high 24 points, and Larrissa Williams and Chanel Johnson both scored in double digits, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane dropped a 72-69 decision to UCF on Thursday night at the UCF Arena in Orlando, Florida. TU fell to 6-15 on the season and 2-7 in Conference USA, while UCF moved to 9-13 overall and 7-2 in the league.
Williams posted her 25th double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Johnson tallied 16 points, pulled down eight boards and had a team-high four blocks. The Golden Hurricane out-rebounded the Knights, 44-30, and had a better shooting percentage from the field and from behind the arc.
Tulsa put together an impressive first half, spurred by Johnson who led TU with 12 points and four blocks and Williams who added 11 points. The Golden Hurricane maintained the lead for the majority of the first 20 minutes, out-rebounded the Knights, 26-15, shot 45-percent from the field and took a 33-28 lead into the break.
UCF came back in the second half to tie the game at 40-all with 15:02 to play, and then pulled to a game-high 10-point lead at both the 13:11 and 6:52 marks. TU, however, battled back and took the lead, 64-63, with 1:25 on the clock. Emma Cannon gave the Knights the lead for the remainder of the contest with her layup with just over a minute to play and UCF finished with the three-point win.
The Knights were led by Angelica Mealing who recorded 20 points in the contest, while Cannon and Amber Kirkpatrick each added 15 points and two blocks. Cannon also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, taking on Southern Miss beginning at 12 noon at the Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The TU-USM contest will be broadcast live on CSS and Tulsa's Cox Cable Channel 3, and tape delayed on CBS College Sports.
