Hurricane, Sooners Rule In Norman

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team has the most members remaining in singles play at the 2010 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships, as the Golden Hurricane sent three into the quarterfinals Saturday.
Tulsa and Oklahoma each have a trio of individuals remaining for those two elusive tickets to the National Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., and Drake rounded out the final two spots.
No. 34-ranked sophomore Marcelo Arevalo, No. 39-ranked junior Ashley Watling and sophomore Tristan Jackson all won two matches without dropping a set Saturday to advance to the quarters.
Watling dropped Robin Goodman of Drake 7-5, 6-3 in the second round and beat Adam Fabik of Southern Illinois 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16.
Jackson ruled the Golden Gophers of Minnesota as he took out Phillip Arndt 6-3, 7-5 and disposed of No. 71 Tobias Wernet 6-2, 6-0.
Arevalo handed Mauricio Ballivian of Drake a 7-6 (5), 6-0 whooping and won the Hurricane Clash as he was forced to eliminate sophomore teammate Clifford Marsland 7-5, 6-4.
Marsland won his second round match 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 over Matthew Hogan of Arkansas before being eliminated by Arevalo.
The three remaining TU players will begin quarterfinal action at 9 a.m. Sunday. Watling will face Jean Erasmus of Drake, James McKie of Drake awaits Jackson, and Arevalo will do battle with Oklahoma's No. 55-ranked Costin Paval.
If Jackson and Arevalo each advance into the semifinals, they will play each other for a trip to New York.
The last remaining doubles duo of Watling and Arevalo lost a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals late Saturday evening. They were dropped by the No. 61-ranked Nebraska tandem of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim 9-8 (5).
Sophomore Grant Ive was eliminated in the second round of singles play by Matheus de Paula Pereira of Wichita State 6-3, 6-2.
