TULSA, Okla. - The 33rd-ranked Tulsa men's tennis team earned a tough 4-2 win over 35th-ranked Auburn on Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Hurricane improves to 9-3 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-4.
In his first collegiate match, freshman Marcelo Arevalo came from behind to upset 25th-ranked Tim Puetz, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, in No. 1 singles to clinch the Hurricane victory.
Auburn broke up the nation's top-ranked doubles tandem of Tim Puetz and Alex Stamchev in hopes strengthening the rest of the doubles lineup, but Tulsa still went onto to sweep all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.
Marcelo Arevalo and Grant Ive quickly defeated Tim Hewitt and Lucas Lopasso, 8-4, in the No. 3 position, followed by 44th-ranked Philip Stephens and Ashley Watling defeating Tim Puetz and Andreas Mies, 8-6, in the No. 1 flight. Marko Ballok and Alastair Barnes topped Alexander Sajonz and Alex Stamchev, 9-7, in No. 2 doubles to finish the sweep.
Tulsa jumped on the board first in singles action with freshman Grant Ive quickly dispatching of Alexander Sajonz, 6-1, 6-1, in the sixth position, followed by Marko Ballok clipping Andreas Mies, 7-5, 6-2.
Auburn rebounded to claim wins in the No. 2 and 4 singles positions, before Arevalo sealed the TU win.
The Hurricane hits the road to face No. 46 TCU on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in Forth Worth, Texas.
