West Windsor, N.J. - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team earned two gold medals, four silver medals and one bronze medal on Sunday morning at the USRowing Collegiate Championship at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
"I can't help but be pleased with the performance of the team," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "It was a great way to end the season for the majority of the team, as we only have the Lightweight IRA left to race this season. The team as a whole stepped up and I am really happy with the way things turned out for us this weekend."
A junior from Jacksonville, Fla., Carla Horne recorded a top time of 9:14.34 in the Collegiate 1x to earn a gold medal. Sophomore Katie Holtvogt finished in fifth place with a time of 9:26.94. In the Lightweight 1x, junior Heather Brooks posted a second-place mark with her time of 9:54.89 for a silver medal.
"Carla winning the Single was a great way to start the day," Harris said. "She hasn't been able to practice much in the Single, so it shows that our training has improved overall."
Holtvogt and Horne combined in the Collegiate 2x for a bronze medal with their time of 8:34.00, while Allyson Brooks and Meredith Papps were two slots back in a time of 8:52.90.
Hannah Bogan and Anne Campbell competed in the Lightweight 2x, turning in a fourth-place mark with a time of 9:28.93, and Kellyn Smith and Susan Stangl were just over four seconds behind for fifth place in the event.
In the Collegiate 4x, the Golden Hurricane `A' boat captured a gold medal, posting a time of 7:53.52, while the `B' boat was in fifth place.
"Senior Aidan [Leddy] stepped up and led three freshmen to a gold medal in the Quad," Harris said. "The fact that they were able to win the gold medal is fantastic and it was a lot of fun to watch. They all then quickly jumped into an Eight and helped put together some solid races."
TU's Collegiate 4- registered a second-place finish with a time of 8:20.22, and the Collegiate 4+ earned a sixth-place mark.
Both of Tulsa's Eights posted silver-medal finishes, as the Lightweights recorded a time of 7:52.60 and the Open Weight's inched ahead of Massachusetts for second place with a time of 7:26.14.
The Golden Hurricane will conclude the season at the Lightweight Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship on June 3-5 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
