AURORA, Ore. - The University of Tulsa sophomore golfer Kristina Merkle won the Safeway Classic Amateur Open with an 18-hole score of 71, a three-stroke margin over the second-place finishers, Monday at Langdon Farms Golf Club.
Merkle, a native of Honolulu, and the 2010 Conference Freshman of the Year, earned a sponsor's exemption to play in the LPGA's Safeway Classic on Aug. 16-22 in North Plains, Oregon. The 54-hole tournament will be Merkle's first LPGA Tour event.
Merkle started her round Monday with a birdie on the first hole and coasted through the next 13 holes before posting a double bogey on the par-4 15th. She sat one shot over for the round as she reached the par-5 18th. Fighting back from a tee shot that went right and a second shot she pulled left, Merkle dropped her 150-yard shot to the green with a 6-iron within four feet of the pin. She holed her birdie putt, securing the win.
