Tulsa, Oklahoma - Loren McDaniel and Denise Lewis both netted double-digit points for Tulsa, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane fell to Rice, 61-53, on Sunday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. TU dropped to 4-6 on the season and 0-2 in Conference USA, while the Owls moved to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.
McDaniel had a team-leading 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 35 minutes of play, while Denise Lewis added 12 points and seven rebounds. Chanice Scott tallied eight rebounds and had a team-best four assists and two steals.
Both teams led by seven points in the first half to go along with three lead changes and a tied score, but the Owls took a 30-28 advantage into the break.
In the second half, there were four more lead changes and six tied scores, but Rice climbed to a game-high nine-point advantage with 4:26 left to play. TU came back and pulled to within three (56-53) with 51 seconds remaining on the clock, but the Owls made five free throws to earn the eight-point victory.
Rice was led by a trio of players in double digits, including Jessica Kuster with 17 points, Brianna Hypolite with 15 and Morgan Mayse with 14 points. Kuster also netted double-digit rebounds with 15, while Mayse had two steals and Jessica Goswitz had four assists.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, January 13th against SMU. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Reynolds Center.
