TULSA, Okla. - Juniors Tristan Jackson and Grant Ive were both eliminated in the opening round of the qualifying draw at the 2011 ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships Monday afternoon at Case Tennis Center.
Jackson lost a tight three-set thriller to Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt, and Ive fell in straight sets to Texas' Daniel Whitehead, the No. 8 seed in the tournament.
Jackson dropped the opening set 6-4, but battled back to knot the match after winning the second set 6-3. Austin was able to get an early break in the third and decisive set, and he held on to win the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Ive was pitted against Whitehead, the No. 59-ranked player in the nation, in a rematch from two weeks ago when the two met at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas.
In both instances, Whitehead bested the Golden Hurricane by identical 6-1, 6-4 margins. In this meeting, Ive broke Whitehead's serve to jump out to a 1-0 lead, but the Longhorn broke right back and went on to win six-straight games to close out the first set. Ive fell behind two breaks in the second set and was only able to get one back.
The duo of Jackson and Ive are not finished in competition, however. The two will compete in the consolation singles draw Tuesday, and they are also entered in the Main Doubles Draw, which begins Friday.
Also yet to compete are senior Ashley Watling, junior Clifford Marsland and sophomore Japie De Klerk. All three will begin competition in the Main Singles Draw Thursday, and Watling and Marsland will join Ive and Jackson in the Main Doubles Draw.
