Marsland Named C-USA Tennis Athlete of the Month

IRVING, Texas - Clifford Marsland was named the Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month for the month of September, the league announced today.
The junior member of the Tulsa men's tennis team has had a stellar start to the fall season, posting a 5-1 mark in singles in the month of September.
He earned the No. 2 seed and advanced to the semifinals at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational Sept. 16-18 in Midland, Texas. Along the way, he defeated Yauheni Yakauleu of UT-Arlington, Phillip Seifert of Rice and Vlad Stefan of Maryland.
He also went 2-0 at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, Calif. He defeated Dennis Mkrtchian of UCLA in three sets and downed Brandon Fickey of Tennessee in straights.
Marsland is currently ranked No. 51 in the nation, which is his best-career ranking. He earns his first C-USA monthly honor.
Other current members of the TU men's tennis team to earn a monthly honor are senior Ashley Watling (October 2009) and junior Marcelo Arevalo (October 2010).
Next up for Marsland and the rest of the Tulsa men's tennis team will be the Main Draw at the 2011 ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships, hosted by TU. The competition begins Thursday for both the singles and doubles Main Draw.
