TULSA, Okla. - Five members of The University of Tulsa men's tennis team are all set to compete in the Main Draw at the 2011 ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships Thursday at Case Tennis Center.
The three players entered in the Main Singles Draw will kickoff action bright and early at 8 a.m. on Courts 1-3.
Senior Ashley Watling, ranked No. 44 in the nation, is set to face No. 30 Enej Bonin of Denver on Court 1. Watling reached the quarterfinals in 2009 and fell to No. 3 Bradley Klahn of Stanford in the first round last year.
Sophomore Japie De Klerk, the No. 29-ranked player in the nation, will face No. 74 Yannick Maden of Clemson on Court 2. Maden maneuvered his way through qualifying over the last three days, and De Klerk will be making his first appearance in the tournament after joining the Golden Hurricane last spring.
Junior Clifford Marsland, ranked No. 51 in the nation, will be tested by No. 49 Chris Mengel of Duke on Court 3. Marsland fell in the opening round at the ITA All-American Championship a year ago.
If any of the three players triumph in their opening matches, they will be back in action early Thursday afternoon in the second round of the singles championship.
The first round of the Main Doubles Draw is also set to begin Thursday, and the Golden Hurricane has two teams scheduled to compete.
Marsland and Watling, ranked No. 4 in the nation and seeded fourth in the tournament, will face the No. 24 tandem of Nathan Pasha and Hernus Pieters of Georgia at 5:30 p.m. Pasha and Pieters earned a wildcard into this event, and Marsland and Watling advanced all the way to the championship match of the consolation bracket last year.
Ive and Jackson have a strong first-round opponent in Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt of California. The Golden Bear duo is ranked No. 5 in the country and is seeded fifth in the tournament. This match is tentatively set for 6:30 p.m.
Ive and Jackson also wrapped up their singles competition in the qualifying consolation draw.
Ive defeated Daniel Hoffman of Yale 6-4, 6-4, while Jackson fell to Will Vasos of Iowa 6-3, 6-2.
