IRVING, Texas - Freshman Japie De Klerk was named the Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced today.

He helped Tulsa to a 5-2 victory over No. 47 TCU this past week with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Zach Nichols, which at the time brought the Golden Hurricane to within one point of the win.

The team victory was eventually sealed by sophomore Marcelo Arevalo, and during doubles play De Klerk and Arevalo teamed up to post Tulsa's lone doubles victory in an 8-6 victory over Nichols and Daniel Sanchez.

The rookie sensation has posted a perfect 11-0 mark in singles action this year and is currently ranked No. 117 in the nation. He is 10-1 in doubles and 7-0 as a duo with Arevalo. That tandem was recently named the No. 39-ranked doubles team in the nation.

De Klerk picks up his second Athlete of the Week honor (Jan. 25).

This is also the fourth time this year a member of Tulsa's squad has earned a weekly honor. Arevalo earned C-USA Athlete of the Week honors Feb. 1, and sophomore Clifford Marsland was bestowed the same award Feb. 22.

Tulsa is set to begin a treacherous five-match road stretch, starting with a trip to Dallas. TU will face No. 64 SMU at 2 p.m. March 3. Other ranked opponents on the road trip will include No. 19 Texas Tech (March 5) and No. 8 Michigan (March 11).
