TU Wins Slugfest At USF, 5-2

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team battled a tough atmosphere in Florida to defeat USF Thursday afternoon at the USF Varsity Courts.
The No. 27-ranked Golden Hurricane (13-4) came out of a treacherous five-game road stretch with a 4-1 mark and wins over three ranked opponents.
The No. 50-ranked Bulls (8-5) won the doubles point, but Tulsa fought through a rough road atmosphere to win five of six singles matches and claim the team victory.
Junior Rusty Turpin and sophomore Alastair Barnes kicked off doubles action with an 8-6 loss to Wael Kilani and Sebastian Hagn from the third position.
The No. 20-ranked tandem of junior Ashley Watling and sophomore Clifford Marsland defeated No. 62-ranked Lucas Jovita and Jamal Adderley 8-6 at the top of the lineup, but the No. 67-ranked pair of sophomore Marcelo Arevalo and freshman Japie De Klerk lost their first match as a team, 8-7 (8-6), to Romain Deridder and Yannick Yoshizawa at No. 2 doubles.
The duo is now 9-1 this season.
Watling, the No. 68-ranked singles player in the nation, evened the team score at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Adderley at No. 3.
The Golden Hurricane took the lead for good after sophomore Grant Ive took down Yoshizawa 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) from the fifth position. No. 123-ranked Marsland defeated Deridder 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3 from the fourth spot, and No. 123-ranked De Klerk clinched the match for Tulsa with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph for Kilani at No. 2 singles.
With TU leading 4-1, the two teams split the final two singles matches for the 5-2 Golden Hurricane victory.
No. 59 Arevalo defeated No. 73 Jovita 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 from the top of the order, and sophomore Tristan Jackson lost at No. 6 singles to Juan Carlos Gerad 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2.
The loss by Jackson was just the second for Tulsa this season from the sixth position.
The Golden Hurricane will return home at 1 p.m. March 26 for a matchup against Conference USA foe Tulane at Case Tennis Center.
