Tulsa Men Golfers in Fourth Place at C-USA Championship

Texarkana, Arkansas - The Tulsa men's golf team sits in fourth place after the opening round at the 2011 Conference USA Championships. The Hurricane carded an even-par score of 288 and is tied with East Carolina at the par-72 Texarkana Country Club.
SMU holds the team lead after shooting a 10-under par score of 278, leading second-place Memphis by three strokes as the Tigers shot seven-under 281 on Sunday. The next five positions are all within five strokes of each other as Houston (288), Texas and East Carolina (289) and UAB and Southern Miss (291) round out the top seven teams.
Tulsa junior Stephen Carney and freshman Johannes Veerman finished the day with one-under par rounds of 71.
Starting on the 10th hole, Carney birdied his first hole, the par-4 10th, and then suffered bogeys on the 12th and 14th holes. Carney went on a string of three straight birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th hole, but ended his first nine holes with a bogey on the par-4 18th hole and made the turn at one-under par. He went two-under when he birdied the par-4 first hole, but gave that stroke back with a bogey on the par-3 6th hole.
Veerman shot even par on his first 10 holes, before dropping in a birdie on the par-5 second hole. He bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole before knocking in a birdie putt on the par-4 eighth hole and closed the day at one-under par 71.
Fellow freshman John Young Kim was one-under par after his first nine holes and went three-under when he eagled the par-5 second hole. Young Kim could not hold his three-under score as he bogeyed three of his final five holes and finished the first 18 holes with an even-par score of 72.
Tulsa junior Arie Fauzi and sophomore Chris Worrell turned in identical rounds of 75 and are tied for 38th place.
SMU's Max Buckley and Memphis' Jonathan Fly are tied for individual medalist honors after shooting five-under par 67s.
The championship will resume Monday at 8:30 am (CT) and the final round will be played Tuesday beginning at 8 am.
