San Diego, Calif. - The Tulsa men's golf team is tied for 11th place after the first round of competition on Thursday at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf San Diego Regional. The Hurricane is tied with Ohio State after the two teams carded 12-over par scores of 300 at the par-72 Farms Golf Club.

The nation's 15th-ranked Southern Cal Trojans lead the field after shooting a 10-under par score of 278. USC leads No. 2-ranked UCLA and No. 11-ranked Texas by nine strokes as the two teams finished the day with scores of 287. North Texas (293) and San Diego (294) round out the top-5 teams.

Tulsa is only six strokes behind fifth place, as the top-five teams following Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.

Tulsa's Arie Fauzi sits in 12th place overall after an opening round score of one-under par 71. Fauzi started the day with a bogey on the par-4 first hole and then bogeyed the par-3 fifth hole. He got one stroke back with a birdie putt on the par-5 ninth hole to finish the front nine at one-over par.

Fauzi appeared to had gotten in a groove on the final nine holes as he birdied back-to-back holes at the 12th and 13th. However, his one-under par score after 13 holes turned back around to one-over par when he bogeyed holes 15 and 17. The junior, though, eagled the par-5 18th hole and finished the day with his one-under par score.

Sophomore Chris Worrell and freshman John Young Kim are tied for 44th place with identical scores of 76. Junior Stephen Carney is in 53rd place with a 18-hole total of 77, while freshman Johannes Veerman is in 60th place with a score of 79.

The second round will get underway on Friday morning, while the final 18 holes will be played Saturday.
