Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa women's basketball coach Matilda Mossman announced today the addition of Fred Castro as an assistant coach. He is will serve as the recruiting coordinator and will work with the perimeter players.
Castro returns to Oklahoma where he served on the basketball staffs at Oklahoma (2001-07) and Rogers State (2007-08).
"Fred is an up-and-coming star," Mossman said. "He is a tireless worker who develops relationships very quickly and since there is already a familiarity with him and our staff I think the transition will be a very smooth one. Fred is from Denton, Texas, originally so he has a lot of contacts in Texas, as well as Oklahoma, and has extended his contact base in the last few years, which will help us even more in recruiting."
"I am excited for the chance to return to Oklahoma and the opportunity to work with Coach Mossman and the rest of the staff," said Castro. "The University of Tulsa has so much to offer in terms of academics and athletics, and I am looking forward to hitting the ground running and seeing what the future holds."
Castro comes to TU after serving as an assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Albany last year. He was responsible for on-the-floor coaching, game scouting, recruiting, game scheduling and served as the liaison to academic and athlete support services. Castro helped coach the Great Dane's to their first winning season since becoming a Division I program.
Prior to his stint at Albany, Castro was an assistant coach at Mercer University for two seasons, where he helped coach the second-best turnaround in the country during the 2008-09 season with a 17-13 record, improving from the 2007-08 season by 12 wins, and earn the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference a year later.
Castro was an advance scout for the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx in 2009-10.
Previously, Castro was an assistant men's basketball coach at Rogers State in 2007-08, and held various positions at Oklahoma from 2001-07, including video/travel coordinator (2005-07), volunteer coach (2004-05) and manager/scout team player (2001-04).
Castro earned his degree in aviation from Oklahoma in 2004.
