Huntington, W.Va. - Taylor Hooker and Jessica McQuin each scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 63-45 decision to Marshall on Sunday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va. The Golden Hurricane fell to 6-7 on the season and 1-1 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd moved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
"We just had too many people that didn't show up and play today," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "Jessica and Taylor gave us great effort. The key thing for us going into today was not putting them on the free throw line, but we didn't do a good job defensively and we put them on the line. The other key was our turnovers and them scoring off our turnovers."
Hooker had a team-best 11 points and tied her career high of six steals, while McQuin had 10 points and a career-best three steals. Chanice Scott and Taleya Mayberry had six points apiece. Tiffani Couisnard pulled down seven rebounds, and Mariah Turner and Scott each had five boards.
TU shot 34-percent from the field, including just 20-percent from behind the arc, while going 7-for-16 from the line (43-percent). Marshall had a 47-33 lead in rebounds and a narrow 14-13 advantage in steals, while both teams had 25 turnovers.
The Hurricane had a 28-26 lead in points in the paint, while Marshall recorded 35 points off turnovers to Tulsa's 12.
Couisnard put the Golden Hurricane on the board with just five seconds ticked off the clock and TU had the advantage for the first 12 minutes, but Rashedah Henriques hit both free throws to give Marshall a 13-12 lead with 7:42 left to play. Tulsa was held scoreless for 8:36 off the clock, spanning from 12:28 to 3:52, as the Thundering Herd climbed to a nine-point advantage and then took a 27-21 advantage into the break.
TU continued to struggle finding the basket in the second half, as Marshall had a game-high 19-point advantage with 3:22 remaining, and earned the 18-point victory.
The Thundering Herd was led by Lateidra Elliott with 14 points, followed by Erica Woods with nine points, and Henriques and Alaya Mitchell both had seven. Alyse Poindexter pulled down nine rebounds, including eight on the offensive end, while Leandra King had four steals.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, January 12th against UTEP. Game time is set for 8:00 pm in El Paso, Texas.
