TULSA, Okla. - The No. 23-ranked University of Tulsa men's tennis team fell to No. 25 San Diego 4-3 Sunday afternoon inside Case Tennis Center.
The Golden Hurricane (2-5) dropped the doubles point to the Toreros (3-2), and the two teams split the six singles matches.
Senior Ashley Watling and junior Clifford Marsland comprise the No. 3 doubles team in the nation, and they took down Nikola Bubnic and Thibaut Visy 8-4 from the top court, but that would be the lone doubles win for the home team.
Juniors Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson fell 8-4 to Ciaran Fitzgerald and Patrick Pohlmann, and freshmen Lucian Gheorghe and Alejandro Sanchez lost 8-4 to Victor Pugliese and Clarke Spinosa.
Tulsa won the first singles match as Sanchez defeated Emilio Mora 6-3, 6-1 from the bottom of the order, but San Diego moved ahead 3-1 after No. 61-ranked Visy defeated Gheorghe 6-2, 6-4 from the fourth flight and Spinosa dropped No. 88-ranked Ive 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 on the third court.
The Golden Hurricane mounted a comeback after Jackson defeated Fitzgerald 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on the fifth court and No. 83 Watling defeated No. 92 Pohlmann 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 at the top of the lineup.
With the score tied 3-3, the team competition came down to the second court, where Bubnic was able to hold on to defeat Marsland 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-5.
The Golden Hurricane is in the midst of a seven-match home stretch, and Tulsa returns to Case Tennis Center at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 for a matchup with Wichita State.
