Tulsa Golfers in 3rd Place at NCAA Greensboro Regional

Greensboro, NC - The Tulsa men's golf team turned in solid performance on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Greensboro Regional. Tulsa carded a five-over par 293 for third place at the Grandover Resort East Course in the 14-team field.
Tulsa is 10 strokes behind leader Liberty, who shot a score of 283, while SMU is five strokes ahead of the Hurricane in second place with a score of 288. Ninth-ranked UNLV also shot 293 to tie Tulsa for third place, as Texas Tech's score of 294 rounds out the top-five teams. Louisiana-Lafayette and Lamar (295), 5th-ranked Auburn (296), Indiana (298) and Florida (299) round out the top-10 teams.
Hurricane sophomore John Young Kim sits in third place overall after a round of three-under par 69 on Thursday. Kim turned in birdie putts on holes 1, 6, 14 and the par-5 18th hole, while his lone bogey came on the 11th hole.
Freshman Matt Mabrey carded a score of one-over par 73 and is in a 15th-place tie after day one. Mabrey's play was up-and-down throughout the 18 holes as he had six bogeys and five birdie putts. Chris Worrell is in 24th place after shooting a two-over par 74. The junior was one-under par after the first nine holes with three birdie putts and two bogeys, but had a string of bogeys on holes 11, 12 and 13 and finished the round at two-over par.
Fellow junior Mark Mumford is in 51st place with a score of 77, while freshman Colton Staggs scored a round of 79 for 60th place.
SMU's Matt Schovee carded a five-under par 67 and is in first place overall to lead the second-place Mustangs.
Following Saturday's final round the low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA championship finals. The championship finals will be held May 29-June 3 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California and is hosed the University of Southern California.
