Tulsa Hosts Lamar on Monday
Tulsa (0-1) returns to action on Monday, November 17, against Lamar (0-1). Game time is set for 6:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

The Series
The series between Tulsa and Lamar is tied, 1-1, with both teams losing on their home court. The Hurricane picked up a 68-67 win last season in Beaumont, Texas, while the Cardinals earned an 81-70 decision in the 1983-84 season.

Leading the Way
Senior Mariah Turner is averaging a double-double with 24.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, while classmate Kadan Brady is second in both categories with 11.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg.

Scouting the Opponent
Lamar dropped a 75-55 decision to Louisiana Lafayette in their season opener last week. The Lady Cardinals were led by Dominique Edwards with 20 points, Baileigh O'Dell with 12 points and Kiandra Bowers with 11 points. Laka Blache pulled down eight rebounds and had two blocks in their only contest.

In TU's Last Contest
Mariah Turner tallied her second career double-double with a personal-best 24 points, as well as 11 rebounds, and Kadan Brady added 11 points, but it wasn't enough as the Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 69-66 decision to Northern Iowa on Friday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Along with Turner and Brady, Ashley Clark added nine points, Teanna Reid tallied eight points and Kelsee Grovey added seven points. Brady also pulled down eight rebounds, had a team-best five assists, and her and Reid had three steals.

Four Returning Starters
Tulsa returns four starters from last season, including seniors Kadan Brady and Mariah Turner, and juniors Ashley Clark and Kelsee Grovey. Clark averaged 14.6 ppg and 6.4 rpg, Grovey added 12.5 ppg and 2.4 rpg, Turner scored 10.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg, and Brady had 9.2 ppg and 3.2 rpg.

In Tulsa's Top 10
Mariah Turner, Kelsee Grovey and Kadan Brady have already earned their way into Tulsa's Top 10 career lists. Turner is first with a .574 field goal percentage; Grovey is seventh in three-point field goals made (115), three-point field goal percentage (.366) and free throw percentage (.818); and Brady is eighth in three-point field goals made (103).

Adding Up
Tulsa juniors Ashley Clark and Kelsee Grovey are looking to join the 1,000 point club this season. Only eight players have scored 1,000 points or more in their careers at Tulsa. Clark currently has 615 points, while Grovey has 693.

Tulsa Women's Hoops to Have 14 Games Broadcast Live
The Tulsa women's basketball team will play 14 games that will be broadcast live on either television or internet. The Hurricane will play six games on the American Digital Network, five games on ESPN3, two games on SportsNet New York (SNY) and one game on Cox Sports Television.

UConn to Host American Championship
UConn will host the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., from March 6-9.

The Non-Conference Slate
Tulsa will play an 11-game non-conference slate, which features six home contests, three games against 2014 postseason teams and a trip to Miami for the Thanksgiving Tournament. Nine of the 12 teams that TU could face during the first half of the season finished last year with double-digit wins, while seven had winning records, and Lamar, Miami and Texas Southern all competed in the WNIT.

The League Opponents
Home-and-home games against the defending National Champion UConn Huskies highlight Tulsa's American Athletic Conference schedule for the 2014-15 season. Five teams in The American advanced to postseason play last year, including NCAA Champion UConn, as well as WNIT participants East Carolina, SMU, Tulane and USF.

Tulsa in The American
After nine seasons as a member of Conference USA, The University of Tulsa began its membership in the American Athletic Conference on July 1, 2014. The American membership in 2014-15 will consist of 11 institutions: Cincinnati, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, UCF, UConn and USF.

A Hurricane in Tulsa?
The Origination of The University of Tulsa nickname - Golden Hurricane - was created in 1922. A new football coach, Howard Archer came to town and inherited a slew of nicknames dating back to 1895. In the past, Tulsa had been named "Kendallites," "Presbyterians," "Tigers," "Orange and Black," "Tulsans," and of course, "Yellow Jackets." The team started working out in the fall with a new nickname "Yellow Jackets" which was apparently due to the fact that the team was wearing new black and yellow uniforms. The team opened the season and it was apparent that Tulsa was going to have a great year, and trying to seize some publicity for his team, Archer wanted to find a new nickname quickly. After a remark was made in practice one day about "roaring through opponents," and because of their new jersey colors, he thought of "Golden Tornadoes." But a check showed that Georgia Tech already had chosen that tag in 1917. From the tornado, he evolved meteorologically to the hurricane. A few days before the team left for a game against Texas A&M, Archer asked the squad to vote on the name, and thus "Golden Hurricane" was born.
