Hurricane Volleyball Drops Four-Set Road Match to SMU

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team (21-9, 13-6 The American) saw its eight-match win streak come to an end Wednesday, against the SMU Mustangs (25-6, 14-5 The American), 15-25, 21-25, 26-24, 16-25, at the Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas.

The Golden Hurricane had three players with double figure kills, Erica Bohannon (12), Valerie El Houssine (11), and Paige Panfil (11). El Houssine also recorded a team-high 19 digs in the loss.

SMU outhit the Hurricane, .219 to .105 on the day.

The Mustangs drew first blood, as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead, forcing the Golden Hurricane to use an early timeout. Tulsa quickly erased the deficit to notch the match at 5-5.

TU kept the set close through the middle stages, however, the Mustangs widened its margin to 17-12. SMU powered through to the end of the set on an 8-3 run to take an 1-0 advantage.

The second set saw a similar start, after the Mustangs jumped out to a 6-2 lead, forcing another quick TU timeout. SMU held on to its advantage and led 18-12, leading to another Hurricane timeout.

TU managed to cut SMU's lead to 24-21, the closest in the set since 11-8, however, the Hurricane could not overcome the deficit. Tulsa went into halftime down 2-0 for the first time since its match against UCF two weeks ago.

The Golden Hurricane turned the tides in the third, as the they raced out to a 7-3 lead to force SMU to use a quick timeout. Tulsa kept its foot on the throttle and opened its lead to 14-8 to force the Mustang's final timeout of the frame.

Out of the break, SMU quickly cut the score to 15-13, making Tulsa use a timeout of its own. The Mustangs battled all the way back to take its first lead of the match at 19-18.

SMU then held match point at 24-23, before the Golden Hurricane rallied off three straight points to force a fourth set.

In the fourth, the Mustangs held an early 5-2 advantage, before opening the score to 8-4, and forcing a TU timeout. SMU extended the lead to 11-4, and then 14-7, putting TU on its heels.

Tulsa would get back to within five, however, SMU used its home court advantage to carry itself to the four set win.

The Hurricane will now take a couple of days off before traveling to East Carolina to play the Pirates on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., for its final match of the season.
