Shooting Struggles Plague Tulsa in 73-34 Loss to Tulane

New Orleans, La. - Shooting struggles plagued Tulsa in a 73-34 loss to Tulane on Tuesday night at Devlin Fieldhouse in New Orleans, La. The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-10 on the season and 3-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave moved to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the league.
"Our shooting percentage, unfortunately dictated the way we played the rest of the game," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "There is something about kids gaining confidence when they shoot the ball well and we obviously didn't shoot the ball well."
Tulsa had just 17 points in both halves, while shooting 25-percent from the field (14-of-55), five-percent from three-point range (1-of-20) and 62-percent (5-of-8) from the free throw line.
The Golden Hurricane previously ranked 46th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and 60th in field goal percentage, and was second in the league in field goal percentage and third in three-point field goal percentage.
Mariah Turner had a team-best 12 points and seven rebounds, and Ashley Clark added nine points and seven boards. Clark and Kelsee Grovey each had three steals.
Tulsa forced 22 turnovers on 13 steals, but Tulane forced 23 turnovers and had 10 takeaways.
Tulane had a 45-33 lead in rebounds, a 15-7 advantage in assists and a 1-0 lead in blocks.
The 34 points was a new school low for points in a regular season conference game by Tulsa. The previous record was 35 points against UTEP on January 31, 2013.
The Green Wave was led by Kolby Morgan with 17 points, and Danielle Blagg and Leslie Vorpahl with 16 points. Adesuwa Ebomwonyi had eight rebounds.
In the second frame, Tulsa scored just three points in the first 8:14, when Ashley Hughes hit a jumper to make the score 60-22 at the 11:46 mark. Tulane climbed to a game-best 43-point advantage (73-30) at the 1:47 mark and claimed a 39-point victory.
Turner had a team-leading eight points at the half, while Clark picked up five rebounds, Tulane was led by Blagg with 14 points and Vorpahl with 10 in the first frame.
Tulsa struggled to find the basket in the first half, shooting 25-percent from the field, including just seven-percent from behind the arc, but went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. The Green Wave shot a solid 61-percent from the field and 53-percent from three-point range, while missing both of their free throw attempts.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 against East Carolina. Game time is set for 1:30 pm Central in Greenville, N.C.
