Tulsa Falls to Cincinnati 49-38

Cincinnati, Ohio –– Cincinnati scored 21 straight points and held on for a 49-38 victory over Tulsa Saturday night in front of 35,015 fans at Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats became bowl eligible with its sixth win for a 6-4 overall record and 3-3 league mark, while the Hurricane fell to 5-5 and 2-4 in American Athletic Conference play.
With Tulsa ahead 24-21, the Bearcats scored the next 21 points to put some distance between themselves and the Hurricane for a 42-21 lead.
The two teams combined for 1,248 yards as Cincinnati had 652 total yards, while Tulsa put up 588 yards of offense. Dane Evans completed 30-of-49 passes for 375 yards, while Keyarris Garrett was on the receiving end of nine of those passes for 168 yards and one TD. Ramadi Warren had his second straight 100-yard rushing game with 139 yards and two touchdowns.
Cincinnati's Gunner Kiel threw for 386 yards and two touchdowns, while Mike Boone led the running game with 137 yards and three scores.
Tulsa tied the game at 21-21 when Warren scored on his second fourth down-and-one play, this time going 39 yards to cap a 10-play, 95-yard drive. The Tulsa defense had its second takeaway on a fumble recovery by Craig Suits at the Cincinnati 20-yard line, but the Hurricane could only manage a field goal, but it did give Tulsa a 24-21 lead at the 5:14 mark of the third period.
Cincinnati wasted little time in re-taking the lead 28-24 when Kiel connected with Chris Moore on a 43-yard touchdown pass, capping a five-play, 74-yard drive that took just 1:35 off the clock.
A Tulsa fumble gave the Bearcats the ball at the Hurricane 34-yard line with 2:38 remaining in the third quarter. Cincinnati responded with a touchdown 1:02 later to take a 35-24 lead when Tion Green ran in from five yards out.
The Bearcats' Hosey Williams raced 20 yards for Cincinnati's third straight touchdown after Tulsa had taken its three-point 24-21 lead. The run capped an eight-play, 77-yard drive and gave the Bearcats a 42-24 lead with 10:42 left in the game.
Tulsa took the subsequent possession and went 63 yards to the Cincinnati 11-yard line, but failed on fourth down, thus turning the ball over on downs to the Bearcats. However, the Hurricane defense had its third takeaway of the game and gave the offense the ball at the Bearcats 31-yard line.
Tulsa scored six plays later when D'Angelo Brewer rushed the final two yards to for a touchdown, and with the PAT, brought the Hurricane to within 11 points at 42-31, with 5:08 left on the game clock.
After Cincinnati scored for a 49-31 lead with 1:01 left to play, Evans connected with Garrett on a 46-yard touchdown pass, capping a 79-yard, seven-play drive that made the score 49-38 with 0:15 remaining to play.
Tulsa took the game's opening kickoff 75 yards in 12 plays as Evans threw the scoring pass to Connor Floyd who went 18 yards down the sideline for the touchdown at the 10:39 mark. On the drive, Garrett had 68 of Tulsa's 75 yards on four receptions.
After going 4-and-out on its first possession, the Bearcats marched 80 yards in just seven plays and 2:08 to knot the score at 7-7 with 5:36 left on the first quarter clock. The Bearcats took its second straight possession in for a score, this time going 80 yards in eight plays to take a 14-7 lead with 0:33 left in the first quarter.
Trailing 14-7 and on 4th-and-1 from their own 35-yard line, Tulsa decided to go for the first down, and not only did the Hurricane get it, but scored a touchdown on a 65-yard Ramadi Warren run, and after the PAT, knotted the score at 14.
The Bearcats took the subsequent possession for a 21-14 lead when Mike Boone's four-yard TD run capped a seven-play, 58-yard drive.
At halftime, the nation's fifth-ranked offensive team Cincinnati gained 336 total yards, while the nation's 12th-ranked Hurricane offense totaled 249 yards, rushing for 110 yards and passing for 139 yards.
Tulsa will return home next Saturday to close out the home season against the Navy Midshipmen. Kickoff will be announced late Saturday or Sunday.
