Tulsa Volleyball Defeats Tulane in Five Set Thriller

TULSA, Okla. —
Junior outside hitter Rebecca Reeve tallied 19 kills and junior libero Brooke Berryhill picked up 27 digs as The University of Tulsa volleyball team defeated American Athletic Conference foe Tulane, 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 28-30, 25-18, 15-10), Sunday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon tallied 17 kills, while senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper picked up nine kills and registered nine blocks for the Golden Hurricane (13-15, 8-8 American). Tulsa hit a .200 percentage, with 59 kills and 25 errors on 170 attempts, while holding the Green Wave to a .164 attacking percentage (60-30-183) as they fell to 9-19 overall and 3-13 in the conference.
 
In the initial frame, Tulsa had an impressive .452 attacking percent on 17 kills, while Tulane hit .205 with 12 kills. TU took a three point lead early at 9-6, and they extended the lead to four points by the midway point with the score at 15-11. The Hurricane went up by seven points with the score at 18-11 forcing a Tulane timeout. Tulsa lead by five points late in the set with the score at 23-18, before back-to-back kills from TU ended the set 25-18 giving the Hurricane a 1-0 match lead.   
 
In the second set, both teams battled early with the score tied at 7-7 and 12-12. Tulane took a three point lead at 17-14 forcing a Tulsa timeout. The Green Wave score three out of four points coming out of the time out to take a 20-15 lead forcing Tulsa to use its last timeout of the set. The Green Wave extended its lead late in the set to six points at 24-18, before a Tulane kill ended the set 25-18 tying the match score 1-1 going into intermission.
 
In the third stanza, it was deadlock early with the score tied at 11-11, before Tulsa took a three point lead at 16-13 forcing a Tulane timeout. Tulane fought back to tie the score at 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, and 25-25. The score was tied one more time at 28-28, before a Tulsa ball handling error and a Tulane kill ended the set 30-28 giving Tulane a 2-1 match lead.
 
In the fourth frame, Tulsa picked up the pace offensively hitting a .231 percentage on 10 kills, while limiting Tulane to a .069 hitting percentage on 10 kills. TU took a three point lead early in the frame at 9-6, and they maintained that lead through the midway point with the score at 13-10. Late in the set, the Hurricane extended the lead to seven points at 22-15, before going on to win the set 25-18 tying the match score at 2-2 going into the final frame. Reeve pick up five kills in the frame, while junior outside hitter Trinity Alualu and Berryhill picked up three digs.  
 
In the final stanza, the Hurricane took an early 4-0 lead, before Tulane fought back to bring the score within one point at 7-6 forcing a Tulsa timeout. The Hurricane extended the lead back to three points at 11-8, and it went on to score four out of the six final points to win the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
 
The Hurricane travels to Philadelphia, Penn. to take on Temple at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20., and it travels to Manfeild, Conn. to take on UConn at 12:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.
