Three Tulsa women's basketball players scored in double figures to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 74-67 win over Arkansas on Monday night at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. TU moved to 1-3 on the season, while UA fell to 2-2 overall.
"All of our players played really well," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I was really proud of our kids and the fact that they didn't give up the ball. They also had two free throws in the first half and got to the line 24 times in the second half. We played team basketball tonight. We wanted to play together and help each other, and we did that tonight."
"Tatyana was huge. She hasn't had that many minutes all year long, but she is consistent and level headed like Erika – they don't get rattled. What doesn't appear on the stat sheet was how Te'era guarded Jessica Jackson and she did a tremendous job tonight. Kelsee, Net and Tatyana all came up with big threes too. It was a just a great effort all around."
Ashley Clark had a team-best 15 points, four assists and two blocks, while Te'era Williams scored a career-high 14 points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds, while Erika Wakefield added 12 points. Tatyana Perez and Crystal Polk both tallied eight points, and Antoinet Webster scored seven.
Tulsa shot 43-percent from the field, including 41-percent from three-point range, and hit 19-of-26 free throw attempts for 73-percent.
Both teams had 32 points in the paint, while Tulsa had 19 points off the bench, and 14 points off turnovers, and Arkansas had 16 points off the bench and off turnovers.
Tulsa had a game-high 18-point lead with 8:54 left in the contest, but Arkansas made a big push in the final period, outscoring Tulsa 32-24 in the final frame. Jessica Jackson had 16 points in the fourth quarter, nine of which she scored in 20-seconds off the clock, and led UA in scoring 5 of their last 7 attempts.
Tulsa earned its first win over a power-five conference opponent since defeating NC State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2006.
The first quarter was tightly contested as TU and UA traded the lead twice and had three tied scores, but it was the Golden Hurricane that took a 14-11 lead at the first break.
Tulsa inched ahead to a nine-point lead, 29-20, at the 1:45 mark and took a nine-point advantage into halftime, 31-22. Clark had a team-best 10 points, while Williams and Polk both had six points.
In the first half, TU shot 45-percent from the field, but hit just 1-of-6 from three-point range for 16-percent, while holding the Razorbacks to 29-percent from the field and 0-for-5 from behind the arc. The Hurricane hit both of their free throw attempts and Arkansas shot 60-percent (6-of-10) from the charity stripe.
Tulsa scored the first six points in the third quarter, holding Arkansas scoreless until Kelsey Brooks hit a pair of free throws at the 6:49 mark and not allowing the Razorbacks a field goal until there was 5:55 left to play in the third period. TU climbed to 16-point lead with 2:17 on the clock in the third frame and had a 50-35 lead at the final quarter break.
Jackson had a game-best 29 points for the Razorbacks, while Melissa Wolff had nine boards. UA shot 37-percent from the field, 25-percent from three-point range and 61-percent from the free throw line.
Tulsa will return to action against Drake on Saturday, November 28 in the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up in Las Vegas, Nev.
