The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 64-63 decision to George Mason on Sunday afternoon in the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev. TU fell to 1-5 on the season, while GMU moved to 3-5 overall.
"The fact that we weren't making shots, effects your confidence and your ability to play defense and we couldn't get stops on the other end," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We tried to come from behind, but we just got too far behind."
Kelsee Grovey had a team-best 16 points, followed closely by Ashley Clark with 15 points. Crystal Polk came close to double figures with nine and Erika Wakefield added eight. Tyjae' Scales pulled down a career-best seven rebounds.
Tulsa had 20 points in the paint, 16 points off turnovers and 14 points off the bench, compared to GMU's 28 points in the paint, 22 points off the bench and 12 fast break points.
The Patriots had a 38-35 lead in rebounds and a 3-0 advantage in blocks, while the Hurricane had a 13-12 edge in assists and a 13-6 lead in steals.
Tulsa shot 35-percent from the field, 29-percent from three-point range and 81-percent from the free throw line, while George Mason hit 46-percent from the field, 33-percent from behind the arc and 57-percent from the charity stripe.
There were six lead changes in the first five minutes of the first quarter for a 10-9 GMU lead, but Tulsa went cold, missing their last seven shots as the Patriots went on an 8-0 run to close out the first frame with an 18-9 lead.
Tulsa battled back in the second quarter, outscoring George Mason, 21-15, to go into the locker room down, 33-30. This time it was TU that held the Patriots scoreless for over five minutes off the clock from the 5:44 mark to just 35-seconds remaining, while TU went on an 11-0 run during that time and tied the score at 28-all with 1:03 on the clock.
The Hurricane shot just 28-percent from the field, including 26-percent from behind the arc, but hit 8-of-9 free throws for 88-percent, while the Patriots hit 46-percent from the field, 57-percent from three-point range and were 3-of-3 from the charity stripe in the first half.
The two teams nearly paralleled each other in the third frame, but GMU had a 13-12 edge to hold on to a 46-42 lead to start the fourth quarter.
A field goal by Polk and two quick three-pointers by Grovey and TU took a 50-48 lead with 8:14 on the clock, which would be the first of six lead changes as well as five tied scores in the final frame. TU outscored GMU, 21-18, in the fourth quarter, but it was the Patriots that came out on top with the one-point victory.
George Mason was led by Taylor Brown with 21 points, while Tayler Dodson and Kristi Mokube each had nine points. Tiffany Padgett had a team-high six board and Kara Wright had four assists.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, December 2 against Grambling State. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
