Uncasville, CT - Tulane's hot-shooting from three-point range was the difference in the Green Wave's 71-53 victory over Tulsa in American Athletic Conference Quarterfinal action Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Tulane, the No. 6 seed, improves to 22-9 and advances to face USF in Sunday's semifinal match-up, while Tulsa, the No. 3 seed, drops to 17-13 and will have to wait until March 16th to find out its post-season fate.
It was only a week ago that Tulsa claimed a three-point home win against the Green Wave, but tonight it was Tulane's shooting 59-percent from behind the arc and Tulsa's season-high 27 turnovers that didn't help matters. The Green Wave converted on 10-of-17 treys and scored 26 points off of Hurricane turnovers.
Ashley Clark led Tulsa with 23 points, while scoring 19 of Tulsa's 27 points in the second half. Tulane had four players in double-digits, led by Leslie Vorpahl's 17 points. Kolby Morgan added 15, Jamie Kaplan 13 and Courtnie Latham 11 points.
"You take away the turnovers and their scoring off those turnovers and we didn't really play that poorly. We shot the ball pretty well and guarded pretty well for the most part," said Tulsa Head Coach Matilda Mossman. "Tulane's kids played hard and played really well together. We just made too many mistakes. I have to give credit to Ashley Clark here, because when it didn't look like anyone wanted to attack the basket and go score, Ashley took into her own hands and scored."
Tulane started the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 41-28 lead with 15:42 remaining in the game. The Green Wave increased the lead to 14 points, 44-30, at the 12:06 mark on a Vorpahl three-pointer. Tulane took its largest lead of 23 points, 63-40, at the 6:05 mark, and Tulsa couldn't get any closer than 18 points the remainder of the contest.
The Hurricane scored 36 points in the paint compared to 22 for Tulane, but the Green Wave scored 30 points from three-point range compared to nine for Tulsa. The Hurricane also had an edge in rebounds, 31-to-26.
After trailing 12-7 in the first half, Tulsa went on a 13-0 run to take a 20-12 lead at the 7:33 mark when Teanna Reid knocked down a three-pointer. Tulane scored the next five points to cut their deficit to three points, 22-17, with 5:28 left on the first-half clock. The Green Wave tied the score at 24 on a Vorpahl three-pointer with 2:58 remaining in the first 20 minutes and outscored Tulsa 7-2 the rest of the half to take a 31-26 lead into intermission.
The Green Wave knocked down 5-of-8 three-pointers in the first half to secure its five-point lead, while Tulsa managed to convert on just 3-of-7 treys.
Tulane's Kaplan led all scorers in the first half with 10 points, while Tulsa's Grovey and Turner had six points apiece to lead the Hurricane.
