The American Athletic Conference has awarded the 2016 American Women's Basketball Championship to Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., Commissioner Mike Aresco announced today.

"The American Athletic Conference has, over the past two years, created a very special experience for our student-athletes, coaches and fans at Mohegan Sun Arena," said Commissioner Aresco. "We are excited to partner for a third year with a great venue and an outstanding staff who are extremely supportive of women's basketball. We look forward to another very successful tournament."

The agreement between The American and Mohegan Sun Arena is for the 2016 American Women's Basketball Championship with an American Athletic Conference option for the 2017 Championship. The venue boasts a 10,000 seat arena that is home to the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA, and has hosted the WNBA All-Star Game four times. A leader in the sports and entertainment business, Mohegan Sun Arena is home to the New England Black Wolves of the National Lacrosse League and has also hosted championship boxing, college and professional men's and women's basketball, top headlining concerts, and Davis Cup tennis.

"Mohegan Sun Arena is thrilled to host the American Athletic Conference women's basketball championship for a third straight year," said Mitchell Etess, President and CEO of Mohegan Sun.  "The past two tournaments have been very successful for us and we are looking forward to continuing to grow this great event with The American."

The 2016 Championship will be played March 4-7, and all 11 American Athletic Conference schools will again participate. Six of those teams went on to play in the postseason in 2015, and the 2015-16 season will mark the third consecutive season that the reigning NCAA Division I Champion University of Connecticut Huskies will be playing in the American Women's Basketball Championship.

The members of the American Athletic Conference are UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, and Tulsa.
