Tulsa Cruises to an 89-50 Exhibition Win over Southern Nazarene

In its final tune-up before next Friday's season-opening game, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane women cruised to an 89-50 exhibition victory over Southern Nazarene Thursday night in front of 212 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
Freshman Kendrien Elliott tallied team-highs of 19 points, 12 rebounds and shared the lead with three blocked shots, while junior Liesl Spoerl added 17 points and seven boards and freshman Shug Dickson totaled 11 points, nine in the first half. Abby Boyd and Madeline Schroepfer led Southern Nazarene with 10 points apiece.
 
After playing only three minutes with two fouls in the first half, Elliott totaled all of her points and rebounds in 13 second-half minutes. She tallied 13 points and 5 rebounds in the third quarter. Elliott finished the game shooting 8-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
 
Tulsa ended the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint with the bench contributing 44 points in the victory. The Hurricane shot 41-percent from the field and 88-percent from the free throw line. Tulsa
 
After taking a 45-27 lead into the half, the Hurricane increased its 18-point advantage to 33 points after three quarters en route to the 39-point victory. Tulsa didn't take its first 20-point lead until 4:55 was left in the third period as Elliott's layup gave the Hurricane a 21-point lead at 56-35. Tulsa outscored the Crimson Storm 14-2 to close out the third quarter with a 70-37 lead.
 
In the fourth, Tulsa had just a six-point advantage, outscoring the Storm 19 to 13. The Hurricane took its largest lead of the game with 0:25 to play at 89-49.
 
Early in the contest, Tulsa broke a 7-7 tie on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead at the 4:40 mark on a layup by Erika Wakefield. The Hurricane took its first double-digit lead at the 2:52 mark, 19-9, on a Shug Dickson layup.
 
The Hurricane increased its lead to 28-15 with 0:51 left in the first quarter, but Crimson Storm scored the final five points, including a Callee Mason three-pointer as the first stanza ended with Tulsa leading 28-18.
 
In the second quarter, Tulsa went on a 13-5 run to take an 18-point lead, 41-23, at the 2:36 mark. The first half ended with Tulsa holding a 45-27 lead. The Hurricane shot 42.9-percent from the field and 88.9-percent from the free throw line and scored 26 points in the paint, while holding Southern Nazarene to a .158 field goal shooting percentage.
 
Spoerl and Dickson shared the first-half lead in scoring with nine points apiece, while Tyjae' Scales had seven of Tulsa's 29 rebounds, and added four points.
 
Tulsa will open the regular season next Friday, Nov. 11 at UMKC, followed by a Monday night (Nov. 14) game at Kansas State.
