Golden Hurricane Win Double-Overtime Thriller Over Memphis
1/31/2026 6:49:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (15-6, 7-2 American) edged Memphis (8-13, 2-6 American), 74-69, in an exciting double-overtime American Conference matchup at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, securing the win with a 9-4 advantage in the final overtime period. It was the Golden Hurricane's first home overtime game since 2020 and their first double-overtime contest since 2011.
Tulsa capitalized on strong board and paint play, out-rebounding the Tigers 48-39, which allowed the Golden Hurricane to outscore Memphis on second-chance opportunities, 11-3.
The Golden Hurricane are now 10-1 in the Reynolds Center this season. It's the fourth consecutive year TU has had 10 or more wins in front of the 918 Faithful. TU is now 21-5 at home since the start of last season, 36-7 since 2023-24, 47-11 since 2022-23 and 55-16 since fifth-year Head Coach Angie Nelp joined the program in 2021-22.
Sophomore guard Jade Clack and redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick took control of the game late when Tulsa needed the big plays most. Clack earned her first career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, creating explosive plays and draining key free throws late. Riddick, a former Memphis Tiger for the last four seasons, produced 22 points and eight rebounds against her former team.
Junior guards Mady Cartwright and Layla-J Cameron had 13 points and 12 points, respectively, while redshirt junior guard Abby Jegede gave TU a massive boost on defense with a career-high 10 rebounds.
"Just super proud of our team," said Nelp. "We showed great resilience and toughness the whole game, not just overtime. We showed a great amount of toughness and togetherness. I loved the balance our team always has. I love that we had multiple players in double-figures. I loved the rebounding on offense and defense as well as our bench energy. Our team gave each other so much energy this game. Whenever you go into a game and your roster may be a little shorter than what you're used to, you know that every single player has to step up a little bit more, and I felt like we did that. Hannah Riddick had a great game. She has a refuse-to-lose mentality. You see Jade Clack's toughness down the stretch. Those two free throws to tie it and the free throw to put us up by four were tough plays."
Tulsa and the Tigers commenced their matchup with a competitive opening quarter. Memphis initially took the lead with Amauri Williams scoring the first points on a layup at 8:50. Tulsa responded with a fast-break layup by Riddick, assisted by Cartwright, to tie the game at 2-2. Memphis then regained control with Jordan Hunter contributing consecutive scores, including a layup at 6:54. As the quarter progressed, Clack and Riddick each added layups to keep their team within reach. Memphis, however, maintained a narrow 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, highlighted by scoring contributions from Paris Gaines and Tamya Smith.
Memphis began the second quarter with a fast-paced layup by Gaines, taking an early lead. Tulsa responded with a strong inside game, highlighted by Cameron's layup at 7:40, narrowing the gap to 18-15. Cartwright's consistent free-throw shooting helped the Golden Hurricane gain momentum, converting four consecutive attempts to keep the score close. The quarter concluded with a layup by Clack with 7 seconds left, capping a 17-8 run for Tulsa and giving them a 28-22 advantage at halftime.
The third quarter saw Memphis narrow the gap against Tulsa with a 19-14 scoring advantage. Key plays included a layup by Hunter at 9:04 that cut the deficit to four points, while Daejah Richmond's fast-break layup at 8:07 brought Memphis within two. Tulsa responded with a 3-pointer from Cameron at 6:24, extending their lead to 33-26. Despite Tulsa's efforts, Memphis continued to chip away, with Williams adding a layup at 1:15 to bring the score to 41-37. The quarter concluded with a layup by Smith at 00:29, leaving Memphis trailing by just one point, 42-41.
Memphis edged out Tulsa in a tense fourth quarter, securing a 55-55 tie in the closing seconds of regulation. Clack scored a crucial layup at 1:02 to narrow the gap to one point, followed by a pair of free throws at 0:05 to equalize the score. Memphis, maintaining momentum, saw Richmond's defensive rebound and layup with 2:04 remaining, keeping their lead intact. Despite a late turnover by Memphis, the Golden Hurricane could not capitalize, leading to the tie as the final buzzer sounded.
The first overtime quarter concluded with Tulsa and Memphis tied at 65, as both teams battled closely throughout the session. Riddick of Tulsa played a key role, scoring a layup at 4:12 and making crucial free throws, including two with 46 seconds left to put Tulsa ahead 65-63. Memphis responded with a layup by Williams, assisted by former Golden Hurricane Kennedi Alexander, to tie the game at 65 with 29 seconds remaining. Despite a late turnover by the Golden Hurricane, the period ended without further scoring, resulting in a draw.
In a tightly contested second overtime quarter, Tulsa secured a narrow victory over Memphis, outscoring them 9-4. Abby Jegede played a pivotal role, contributing two crucial layups, including one at the 2:31 mark following a steal, extending Tulsa's lead. Cameron also added to the home team's momentum with a layup at 2:11, pushing the score to 71-65. Despite a late jumper by Alexander bringing Memphis closer, Tulsa maintained their lead, sealing the win with a successful free throw by Clack with 11 seconds remaining.
