Big Second Half Gives Tulsa 77-58 Win over Florida Atlantic
1/27/2026 7:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (14-6, 6-2 American) defeated Florida Atlantic (9-12, 3-6 American), 77-58, at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Tuesday, outscoring the Owls 41-21 in the second half. The Golden Hurricane dominated the paint with 40 points and held a 35-25 rebounding advantage.
Tulsa shot 55.1% from the field and made 18-of-22 free throws throughout the contest. Leading the way was junior guard Mady Cartwright, who had 18 points and a perfect 4-4 showing at the charity stripe. Redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick earned 16 points along the way and Dora Toman finished with 11. The Golden Hurricane are 7-0 now when Toman scores 10 or more points in a game.
"Really proud of our team and proud of that second half," Head Coach Angie Nelp said, who recorded her 90th career win on Tuesday. "I felt like in the first half, we were trying to find our rhythm and be in-sync. Then, in the second half, I thought that we had great focus and attention to detail. I love that we out-rebounded them and had a great assist-to-turnover ratio. One of the biggest things that stands out is the way that we won that game as a team and how many contributors we had across the roster for that game.
"Mady Cartwright did a great job, did a lot of scoring for us. You see her toughness and what she did on the defense in the second half really propelled us forward."
The game commenced with Riddick scoring an early jumper in the paint, setting the tone for a competitive first quarter. FAU quickly responded, with Madi Gewirtz tying the score with a layup. Abby Jegede from Tulsa contributed with a significant layup at 8:16, keeping the score tight. The Owls' Erin Rodgers drained a three-pointer at the 4:22 mark, giving the visitors a slight edge. Alisha Peavy's layup with 53 seconds remaining brought Tulsa within one point, but FAU maintained their lead, ending the first quarter 17-16.
Florida Atlantic and Tulsa ended the second quarter even, each scoring 20 points. Grace Carstensen opened the segment with a three-pointer at 9:11, followed by a layup from Vivian Onugha to extend the visitors' lead. The Golden Hurricane responded with Cartwright's layup at 6:29, narrowing the gap. Later, Riddick added a fast-break layup at 3:26, further closing the deficit. With 1:31 remaining, Cartwright tied the score at 32-32 with another layup, assisted by Jade Clack, who led the Golden Hurricane with four assists on the day. Jess Moors secured the lead for FAU with a layup and free throw at 1:20, and despite a late jumper by Jegede at 00:01, the quarter concluded with FAU holding a slight 37-36 edge.
Tulsa surged ahead in the third quarter, outscoring FAU 21-10 to take control of the game. Cartwright's layup at 9:11 set the tone, and she later added a critical 3-pointer with 4:58 remaining, assisted by Rylee Grays. Grays also contributed significantly with defensive rebounds and converted free throws at 2:10 to extend the Golden Hurricane's lead. The quarter concluded with Cartwright's layup at 0:03, assisted by Peavy, solidifying Tulsa's advantage heading into the final period.
Tulsa secured a decisive victory over FAU with a strong performance in the final quarter, outscoring the visitors 20-11. Cartwright contributed a key steal early in the segment, though a subsequent turnover was quickly recovered by Moors of FAU, who capitalized with two free throws at 9:29, bringing the score to 57-49. The Golden Hurricane responded with a series of successful plays, including a 3-pointer from Toman at 8:17 and another by Cartwright at 7:26, extending their lead to 64-51. Riddick added to the home team's advantage with a layup at 6:02, and Tulsa maintained control throughout the quarter, culminating in a 3-pointer by Clack with 33 seconds remaining to seal the 77-58 win.
Tulsa will remain home to host Memphis (8-12, 2-5 American) on Saturday, January 31, at 2 p.m. in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
