Shug Dickson, Alexis Gaulden and Erika Wakefield all scored in double figures to lead Tulsa, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane dropped a 72-67 decision to American on Friday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.  TU fell to 0-1 on the season and AU moved to 1-0 overall.

"I am just proud of the effort the eight players gave us," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "I am really proud of how hard they fought because they gave us a chance.  American has an experienced team with four of their five starters back from last year, and we just struggled to contain them at times."

Dickson tied her career high with 22 points, 16 of which came in the second half, while Gaulden added 19 and Wakefield scored 15.  Freshman Krystan Vornes came in off the bench and had five points, while Rebecca Lescay tallied four and Addison Richards scored a basket.

"Shug got down on herself in the first half because she wasn't making shots, but to her credit she stayed focused and didn't let it affect her.  For a kid like that all it took was one make and she got on a roll."

Vornes pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds, Wakefield had five assists and Gaulden had four steals.

The Golden Hurricane had a 44-40 lead in rebounds, while the Eagles had a 14-11 lead in assists and a 7-4 advantage in blocks.  Both teams had eight steals.

Tulsa shot 38-percent from the field, 41-percent from three-point range and 60-percent from the free throw line, while American shot 36-percent from the field, 38-percent from behind the arc and 80-percent from the charity stripe.

Wakefield and Gaulden led TU with seven points each in the first frame, as the Golden Hurricane had a 22-18 lead over the Eagles after the first 10 minutes.  Tulsa shot 53-percent in the first quarter, including 60-percent from three-point range.

In the second period, after being down 24-22 with 7:23 on the clock, TU went on an 11-0 run to take a 33-24 advantage at the 4:45 mark.  American battled back to tie the game at 33-all with just 1:01 left in the second quarter, which remained the score at halftime.  All 11 of Tulsa's second-quarter points were scored within just 1:42 off the clock.

American had an 18-11 scoring advantage in the third frame, while Tulsa had a 23-21 edge in the fourth quarter.

There were eight tied scored and eight lead changes in the contest.

Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, November 12 against Belmont.  Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Reynolds Center.
