Tulsa Rowing Earns Two Top Marks in First Day of Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational

The Tulsa rowing team earned a first-place mark in the Varsity 4+ and 3^rd Varsity 8+ in the first day of racing at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. TU will conclude racing in the regatta tomorrow.

"Today was a pretty good first look for us in getting the team out on the river for the first time of the season and racing 2,000 meters," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "I am pleased with the way we raced and the way we shifted lineups throughout the two sets – morning and afternoon. As a coaching staff we are pleased with the direction we are headed. We are looking forward to tomorrow and the chance to race Louisville, Notre Dame and West Virginia. We are going to regroup into the best boats we can and see if we can finish out the regatta on a really strong note."

The Golden Hurricane Varsity 4+, which consisted of Paige Hallam, Madeline Oleksiak, Julia Herrel, Amy Pitzel and Marcia Vidaurri, turned in a top finish in a time of 7:21.86 in the Varsity 4+, with wins over Minnesota, Tennessee and Miami in the morning races. In the afternoon, the Four finished third.

Abigail Elggren, Lindsay Crute, Emily Truss, Nichole Backus and Lindsey Smith raced the 2^nd Varsity 4+ to a second-place time of 7:54.77 in the morning races. In the afternoon, the 2V4+ was third.

In the Varsity 8+, Tulsa earned a third-place mark in the morning races, with a time of 6:37.93, trailing Miami and Minnesota, but topping Tennessee. In the afternoon, the Hurricane finished fourth with a time of 6:58.99.

TU's 2^nd Varsity 8+ turned two third-place finishes on the day, with a time of 7:00.33 in the morning and a 6:59.16 mark in the afternoon. The Hurricane earned wins over Miami in both races.

Tulsa captured a top mark with a time of 7:19.23 in the 3^rd Varsity 8+ morning races, crossing the finish line ahead of two Tennessee boats and Miami, and finished third in the afternoon portion.
