Erika Wakefield scored 17 points to lead Tulsa, but Memphis overcame a seven-point halftime deficit for a 69-48 victory Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 278 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Memphis outscored the Hurricane 48-20 in the final 20 minutes of the contest, as the Tigers shot 65-percent from the field in the second half and knocked down 4-of-7 three-pointers for 57 percent.
Tulsa, playing without two of its top six scorers – Kendrian Elliott (6.9) and Tatyana Perez (6.1) – due to injury, shot just 32-percent for the game, 33-percent from three-point range and a season-low 53-percent from the free throw line.
Shug Dickson added 12 points for the Hurricane. Memphis held a 38-31 edge in rebounding, outscored Tulsa in the paint 32-16, had a 14-1 advantage in points off turnovers and 10-0 edge on fast breaks.
Memphis was led by Cheyenne Creighton's 22 points, while Brea Elmore added 19 points and Jada Stinson 15.
"We couldn't shoot the ball," Tulsa head coach Matilda Mossman said. "We had a really dismal start, went 2-for-14 in the beginning, and then we had a great second quarter. That second quarter was as well as we've played all year long. We got into an offensive flow and we got shots. We went into half up seven and thinking things are going our way. We couldn't get on track in the third quarter and things got worse in the fourth quarter, and Memphis got better."
Memphis began the final quarter with a 42-39 lead and extended that to the final 21-point margin by outscoring Tulsa 27-9 to close out the game.
Memphis went on a 9-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half to tie the score at 30-30. The Tigers took the lead at 36-34 on a layup by Elmore at the 2:38 mark of the third period. Morgan Brady's basket at the 0:38 mark tied the game at 39, before Stinson's three with 0:23 remaining gave Memphis its three-point lead after three quarters.
The Tigers equaled their 21 first-half points with 21 points in the third quarter alone, outscoring the Hurricane 21-11.
Memphis converted 9-of-14 third quarter shots for 64-percent from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the arc for 60 percent. Meanwhile, Tulsa managed just 33-percent in the third quarter.
After a slow start in the first quarter, the Hurricane scored 22 second-quarter points, while holding the Tigers to 13 points in the second stanza and took a 28-21 lead into halftime.
Tulsa knocked down its first two second-quarter shots within the first 1:11 of the quarter, to equal its six total points of the first period. Ebony Parker and Wakefield knocked down those first two baskets, both three-pointers, to put the Hurricane ahead 12-11 at the 8:49 mark.
Memphis took a 19-17 lead with 5:45 to play on a jumper by Creighton, but Tulsa scored the next nine points to take a 26-19 lead with 0:59 remaining in the first half. Wakefield's jumper with 0:05 on the clock put the Hurricane ahead by seven points at the intermission.
Tulsa shot 61-percent from field and 60-percent from three-point range in the second quarter.
At halftime, Tulsa's Dickson led all scorers with nine points off the bench, while Wakefield added eight points.
It was a low scoring first quarter as Memphis held an 8-6 lead after the first 10 minutes. Tulsa's six points in the first quarter was a season-low for the Golden Hurricane in any quarter this season.
The teams went scoreless for the first 4:12 of the game until Tulsa's Wakefield converted one of two free throw attempts to give Tulsa a 1-0 lead at the 5:48 mark. Memphis scored its first points on a breakaway layup by Taylor Barnes with 4:21 left on the clock.
Dickson's layup at the 1:57 mark was Tulsa's first field goal of the game, snapping an 0-9 streak from the field and giving the Hurricane a 3-2 lead. The two teams combined for seven points in the final 1:42 of the first period as Memphis held an 8-6 lead at the break.
Tulsa goes on the road this week to face the nation's No. 1-ranked UConn Huskies, Thursday night (Jan. 18) in Storrs, Conn., then travels to New Orleans to play the Tulane Green Wave Sunday afternoon (Jan. 21). The Hurricane returns home against the UCF Knights on Saturday, Jan. 27, for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff at the Reynolds Center.
