Golden Hurricane Storms Past Defending Conference Champs USF

TULSA, Okla. – Majed Kilani clinched the victory for the Golden Hurricane as he won his No. 2 singles match against Alberto Barroso-Campos of USF in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, and 6-3. Tulsa won five of the six singles matches as it defeated the Bulls, 5-2, in the American Athletic Conference opener, Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

In their No. 2 doubles match, Joshua Goodger and Louis Corker defeated USF's pair of Sean Burnette and Jourdan Kast, 6-4.

Grayson Goldin and Alberto Barroso-Campos defeated Kilani and Jarod Hing, 6-1. Peter Bertran and Pierre Luquet knocked off Lucca Baptista and Boriss Kamdem, 6-4. The Bulls took a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Goodger went up against USF's Goldin in the No. 1 singles match. Goodger broke Goldin's first serve, then added a game on his serve to start the first set with a 2-0 lead. The two remained on serve, until Goodger broke Goldin in the seventh game, to take a 5-2 lead. Goodger closed out the first set on his next serve, 6-2. The two remained on serve in the second set until the fifth game, as Goodger broke Goldin's serve once again to take a 3-2 lead. In the eighth game of the second set, Goldin broke Goodger's serve and tied the second at 4-4. Goodger answered in the next game as he broke Goldin's serve and regained the lead, 5-4. Goodger went on to win the set, 6-4, which tied the Hurricane with USF, 1-1.

In the No. 4 singles match, Baptista squared off against Burnette. Baptista broke Burnette's serve in the seventh game and took a 4-3 lead. Baptista went on to break Burnette in the ninth game and won the opening stanza, 6-3. The two remained on serve until the eighth game, when Baptista broke Burnette to take a 5-3 lead. Baptista capitalized on his next serve and won the second set, 6-3. Baptista's victory put Tulsa in front of USF, 2-1.

???????Kamdem earned his first dual match victory of his career, as he defeated the Bulls' Jourdan Kast, 7-5 and 6-4, in the No. 6 singles match. The first set was tied at 1-1 after each player broke the other's serve. With the score tied at 3-3, Kast broke Kamdem's serve and took a 4-3 lead. Kamdem battled back from a 5-3 deficit and took four straight games, to win the opening frame 7-5. The second set was much like the first, both players broke the other's serve early. Kamdem held a narrow 5-4 lead, before he broke Kast again to win the second set, 6-4. Kamdem extended the TU lead to, 3-1.

Hing won the first set against Bertran in the No. 3 singles match, 7-6 (7-2). Bertran responded and claimed the next two sets, 6-2 and 7-5.

???????Barroso-Campos took the opening set of the No. 2 singles match against Kilani, 4-6. Kilani was resilient as he bounced back to win the second set, 6-3. In the third and final set, Kilani broke Barroso-Campos' serve in the third game to take a slight 2-1 lead. Kilani then gained a game on his next serve, before he broke Barroso-Campos for a second time and extended his lead to, 4-1. With the score 5-3, Kilani broke Barroso-Campos once again and secured the third, 6-3. Kilani's match win clinched the Golden Hurricane's victory against USF.

Corker went up against Luquet in the No. 5 singles match. The two men would need a tiebreaker to decide the first. Luquet won the tiebreaker, 7-5, and won the first set, 7-6. Corker answered in the second set, with a 6-3 victory. In the final set, Corker broke Luquet's serve in the third game and took a 2-1 lead. The two stayed on serve the remainder of the set as Corker claimed the third, 6-4. Corker earned his first collegiate victory and gave the Hurricane a 5-2, match victory.

The Golden Hurricane improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Tulsa returns to action Saturday, Jan. 27, as it takes part in the ITA Kick-Off. TU will go up against North Florida, with the match time to be announced at a later date.
