Tulsa Finishes Fourth at Head of the Charles; Medals Three Boats at Jayhawk Jamboree
10/21/2018 5:24:00 PM | Rowing
Tulsa's Lightweight 4+ earned a fourth-place finish at the Head of the Charles, while the Golden Hurricane medaled three boats at the Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday afternoon.
At the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass., TU's Lightweight 4+, which featured Sam Barber, Helen Leigh, Julia Herrel, Lucy Coleman and Sarolta Papp, finished fourth in a time of 20:25.82, just 2.3 seconds behind Boston in third place. Radcliffe was first with a time of 20:07.05, while Vesper Composite was in second place with a time of 20:20.69.
"I was really pleased," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "The Head of the Charles is a major regatta, and a difficult one, especially for coxswains in the nature of the race course. Add in the not-so-great weather conditions and I was happy with how Sam Barber handled the course. I was also really proud of how the rowers handled it. It was windy and cold, which can be hard to perform at a high level, but they really attacked it. To come in fourth is an accomplishment. We haven't been here as a team in about 10 years. It was also nice to see our results at Kansas were great. To divide the team and the staff like that says a lot about how hard we are all working to be successful."
At the Jayhawk Jamboree in Lawrence, Kan., the Golden Hurricane won the Women's 4+ event, which featured Katie Shin, Ellie Russell, Karen Undset, Veronique Ulrich and Sophia Camara. The Tulsa boat captured a time of 15:13.6, which was more than 15-seconds faster than Oklahoma in second place, while the TU 'B' boat was in third place in a time of 15:36.0. The Hurricane 'C' boat was seventh and the 'D' boat was 18th in a field of 24 boats.
In the Women's 8+ event, Tulsa finished second behind Oklahoma, which turned in a time of 14:03.4. Shin, Russell, Undset, Ulrich, Daniela Fusco-House, Paige Hallam, Helen Cassellius, Bobbi Forster and Camara posted a time of 14:14.9, while the Hurricane 'B' was 10th in a time of 15:22.4.
In the 300-meter sprint, Tulsa's 'A' boat was second with a time of 1:00.7, while the 'B' was third in a time of 1:04.4.
"I thought the team did really well," Assistant Coach Michelle Goodwin said. "They went in and got the work done. The conditions weren't desirable, but that didn't stop them. They had some great rows. We have some things to work on, but that is what these races are for. Hopefully in two weeks when we host the Tulsa Fall Invitational we'll be able to put all of the boats out on the water."
The Women's 2x races were cancelled.
"It was really windy and choppy," Goodwin said. "The Four's had a hard time coming down the course so the smaller boat races had to be cancelled."
