INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The University of Tulsa men's cross country team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, it was announced this evening during the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship Selection Show.
The 2018 NCAA Championships will be run at the Zimmerman Championship Course on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis. The men's 10K run will begin at 11:45 a.m.
The Golden Hurricane will be part of the championship field for the ninth time in school history, with all nine coming in the last 12 years (2007, '08, '11, '12, '13, '14, '15, '16, '18).
"It's great to be back at the big dance after missing out last year," head coach Steve Gulley said. "It's important for our program to consistently be in consideration to be selected for the national championship. We have established ourselves as a team that belongs at that meet and we're excited to head to Wisconsin next weekend."
The TU men have won three of its five races this season, including its fifth consecutive American Athletic Conference title. That victory helped the Hurricane claim its ninth straight conference title overall, dating back to time in Conference USA.
Tulsa opened the season with back-to-back wins at the Hurricane Invitational and the Missouri Southern Stampede. The squad was dominant at The American Championships as six runners earned all-conference honors by placing in the top 15. Scott Beattie led the way by placing second, while Isaac Akers was the league's Freshman of the Year with an eighth-place finish.
At Friday's NCAA Midwest Regional, the Hurricane missed out on an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships by finishing in third place at just five points behind Bradley. Peter Lynch and Beattie both took home all-region honors with top 25 marks.
TU got an early look at the Zimmerman Championship course in late September as the squad ran in the annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. Running against 18 other ranked teams, the Hurricane finished 21st in the event, led by Peter Lynch's 69th place finish.
