Shug Dickson and Crystal Polk both scored in double figures for Tulsa, but Belmont came out on top, 78-53, on Monday night at the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tenn. TU fell to 1-2 on the season, while BU moved to 1-1 overall.
"I don't know the answer to our offensive struggles, but we have to continue working on our offensive execution," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "Belmont is really good in their offensive execution, and they have upper classmen who run a system and run it extremely well. They work hard on every possession to get a wide-open look and take very few contested shots. I look back and our last group on the floor – Maddie Bittle, Morgan Brady, Elin Hrafnkelsdottir, KK Rodriguez and Desiree Lewis – and they had the urgency that we needed all night and cut the deficit to 25. Those guys really competed hard, got after loose balls, played well together on the offensive end and they just competed."
Dickson scored a team-best 11 points, while Polk added 10 and Morgan Brady tallied eight. Jasmine Butler pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds.
Belmont had a 50-37 lead in rebounds and a 17-9 advantage in assists, while both teams had seven steals.
Tulsa shot 33-percent from the field, including just 23-percent from behind the arc, and 33-percent from the free throw line, while Belmont shot 42-percent from the field, 32-percent from three-point range and 72-percent from the charity stripe.
Alexis Gaulden put TU on the board first, but the Bruins went on a 20-0 run before Polk scored on a layup with 1:17 to play in the first frame. Belmont had a 23-6 advantage at the end of the quarter as the Golden Hurricane was just 3-of-12 for 25-percent from the field, and the Bruins shot at a 44-percent clip and hit six three's in the first 10 minutes.
Belmont extended their lead in the second quarter to take a 45-19 advantage at the half. TU improved from the field, shooting at 37-percent, and more than doubled their first quarter points.
After going 0-of-9 from three-point range, Brady and Dickson hit back-to-back three's to end the third quarter for Tulsa, but TU trailed 62-34 with one frame to play.
Tulsa outscored Belmont, 19-16, in the final 10-minute period as freshmen Lewis and Rodriguez both had five points.
Belmont was led by four players in double figures, including a team-high 19 points by Darby Maggard, 13 by Ellie Harmeyer, 12 by Maura Muensterman and 10 by Maddie Cook.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, November 17 at Oral Roberts. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Mabee Center on the ORU Campus.
