Three Tulsa Boats Take Gold at Tulsa-UCO Fall Invitational

Tulsa's Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Varsity 4x boats both earned a gold medal in the Tulsa-UCO Fall Invitational on Saturday on the North Canadian River in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The regatta was originally scheduled to be raced on TU's home course at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest on the Verdigris River, but due to poor water conditions the race was moved to Oklahoma City.

"We really appreciate UCO accommodating everyone and hosting the end of season regatta," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "It was disappointing to have to switch venues as we were prepared to host in front of our fans during Homecoming weekend, but we are grateful for Coach Rice and his staff for hosting us and putting on a great race."

"We are a good team that can roll with the punches and our student-athletes understand that you have to go out, do the work and get it done. It was a good result today from all the boats. I am happy to see the boats take on what we've been working on in practice, apply it to race day and go faster."

In the Varsity 8+ race, Sam Barber, Helen Leigh, Julia Herrel, Daniela Fusco-House, Ellie Russell, Karen Undset, Paige Hallam, Lucy Coleman and Sarolta Papp turned in a top time of 14:02.35, more than four seconds faster than SMU in second place and 20 seconds ahead of Kansas, which finished third. Tulsa's 'C' boat was sixth, 'B' boat was seventh in a field of 13 boats.

Katie Shin, Russell, Fusco-House, Veronique Ulrich and Undset registered a time of 15:20.06 for first place in the Varsity 4+. The TU boat was 18 seconds ahead of SMU in second place, while the Golden Hurricane 'C' boat was third in a time of 15:40.53. Tulsa's 'B' boat was sixth, its 'E' boat was 13^th and the 'D' boat was 14^th in a field of 20 boats.

In the Varsity 4x, TU's 'C' boat, which included Undset, Becky Coleman, Julia Olawumi and Bobbi Forster, captured a top finish with a time of 15:02.71, nearly nine seconds ahead of the Golden Hurricane 'A' boat. TU's 'D' boat was third, while the 'B' boat was fifth.

In the Novice 4+, UCO took first with a time of 18:28.97, followed by SMU (19:00.08) and Tulsa in third with a time of 20:08.11.
