Tulsa Captures 55-54 Win Over Stetson in Season Opener

The Tulsa women's basketball team captured a 55-54 win over Stetson in the season opener on Tuesday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
Crystal Polk led the Golden Hurricane with 15 points in 25 minutes off the bench, while Elin Hrafnkelsdottir added eight points, KK Rodriguez scored seven and Shug Dickson totaled six. 
 
Kayla Moutry pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, Alexis Gaulden had four assists and Dickson had two steals, while five TU players all had one block.
 
The Hatters led the almost the entire fourth quarter, including a five-point advantage (52-47) with four minutes to play, but Rodriguez hit a three-pointer and Polk had a layup to tie the score at 52-all with 2:37 remaining.  Two good free throws by McKenna Beach gave SU the lead once again, but Addison Richards' layup with 1:42 remaining knotted up the score at 54-54.  Polk went 1-for-2 from the free throw line with 39-seconds to play to give Tulsa their first lead of the frame, but four missed shots by Stetson to end the game gave TU the one-point win.
 
Tulsa was up by as many as eight points in the third quarter with 8:17 to play, and Stetson was up by eight points in the first frame at the 5:25 mark.  There were five tied scores and nine lead changes in the contest.
 
Tulsa had a narrow 42-41 edge in rebounds, a 16-9 lead in assists, a 5-2 advantage in blocks, and a 7-6 edge in steals.
 
The Golden Hurricane shot 32-percent from the field, including 23-percent from behind the arc and 56-percent from the free throw line, while the Hatters were 30-percent from the field, 23-percent from three-point range and 85-percent from the charity stripe.
 
The Hatters started the game with an 11-3 run for the eight-point lead at the 5:25 mark, but TU cut their deficit to two, 11-9, with four minutes to play in the period.  SU took a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Tulsa outscored Stetson, 13-6, to take a 24-22 advantage with 4:17 to play in the second and climbed to a 29-25 lead at the break.
 
The Hurricane maintained the lead throughout the third quarter until a three-pointer by Beach with 2:24 left to play gave Stetson a 39-38 lead.  The teams traded baskets and the lead three more times in the final 93 seconds, but it was TU that had a 45-43 edge with a quarter to play.
 
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, November 9 at American.  Game time is set for 6:00 pm Central in Washington, D.C.
