Tulsa Volleyball Drops Five-Set Battle to SMU

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball squad (17-9, 9-5) fell to SMU (10-14, 7-7), 3-2, in its first loss in a five-set match this season on Friday inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
At home this season, the Golden Hurricane remains a lofty 10-2 inside the Reynolds Center.
Senior Emily Thorson knocked down 10 kills in the match, moving her to No. 6 TU all-time in the category. Thorson moves ahead of Kassiana Urnau with 1,090 total kills, while Urnau finished her career with 1,087.
The Hurricane stormed ahead in the first set behind four kills each from sophomore Callie Cook and freshman Elyse Savadove, taking the set, 25-18. The Tulsa defense held SMU to a .057 hitting percentage in the frame.
The Mustangs fought back in the second set, taking it, 25-21. Junior DS/L Taylor Horsfall held strong on the back line for the Golden Hurricane, racking up 11 digs in the stanza.
In the third set, the TU offense caught fire, hitting at a .400 clip and tallying 15 kills to secure the frame, 25-14. Cook once again stepped up with four kills on a perfect four swings.
Tulsa struggled to find its rhythm in the fourth set, as SMU rattled off a 6-0 run in the middle of the stanza to nab set four, 25-14. Thorson showed her prowess on the defensive end, pacing the Hurricane with six digs in the set.
The fifth and final set played out much like the match, as a back-and-forth set led to the Mustangs edging out Tulsa, 15-12. Horsfall racked up another six digs in the frame, despite the team falling to 3-1 in five-set matches this season
Horsfall is nearing No. 3 all-time in digs, as she's now tallied 1,578 in her time with Tulsa. She is approaching Evyn Bandy, now Evyn Wills, wife of head coach Ryan Wills, who finished her career with 1,590 in the same category.
As a team, the Golden Hurricane accumulated 50 kills, to go along with 90 digs and eight service aces in the defeat. Thorson, Cook and setter Mariah Pardo all notched double-doubles in Friday's match.
Wills' bunch hosts its final home match of 2018 on Sunday, as it goes head-to-head with Houston (16-13, 3-11) inside the Reynolds Center for Senior Day.
