Golden Hurricane Splits the Day in Texas

DALLAS/FORT WORTH, Texas – The Tulsa men's tennis team traveled to Texas for two matchups on Wednesday. The Hurricane pulled out a come-from-behind 4-3 victory against UT Arlington (7-4), but fell to No. 26 TCU (6-2), 4-0. The TU and UT Arlington match took place at the SMU Tennis Complex, while the TCU match was played at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Lucca Baptista and Majed Kilani picked up a doubles win against Eduard Simo and Sansidh Kommaraju, 6-2, in the No. 2 doubles match.

Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Del Rio knocked off Joshua Goodger and Jarod Hing in the No. 1 doubles match, 6-4. Enrique Pardo and Andre Russo secured the doubles point for the Mavericks, as they beat Mitchell Pritchard and Louis Corker, 6-4, in the No. 3 doubles position. UT Arlington led 1-0 after the completion of doubles play.

Hing won the opening stanza of the No. 4 singles match against Simo, 6-3. Hing continued to cruise as he took the second set, 6-0. Hing improved to 6-9 on the season in dual singles matches. Hing's victory tied the overall match at 1-1.

After Abhishek Bostola defeated Corker in the No. 6 spot, 6-4 and 7-5, Del Rio knocked off Baptista, 7-5 and 6-4. The Mavericks led the match 3-1 at the conclusion of three singles matches.

The No. 81 ranked Goodger took the first set of the No. 2 singles match, 6-2, against Pardo. Goodger continued to roll as he claimed the second set, 6-4. Goodger improved to 9-3 in singles matches. Goodger's victory started the comeback for Tulsa, as TU pulled within one, 3-2.

Pritchard won the first set in the No. 5 singles match against Russo, 6-4. Russo responded and captured the second set, 6-4. Pritchard was resilient and battled back to claim the final set, 6-4. Pritchard moved to 4-5 in singles match play. Prichard's victory tied the overall match at 3-3.

Nuez won the opening frame of the No. 1 singles match against Kilani, 7-6. Kilani was unfazed and went on to claim the second, 7-6. The final set would decide the winner of the overall match. Kilani used the momentum from the second set and won the final set, 6-4, giving the Golden Hurricane a 4-3 match victory.

#26 TCU 4, Tulsa 0

The No. 57 ranked doubles team of Alex Rybakov and Guillermo Nuñez defeated Baptista and Kilani, 6-1, in the No. 2 doubles match. Alastair Gray and Reese Stalder knocked off Goodger and Hing in the No. 1 doubles match, 6-4.

At the No. 3 position, the No. 27 ranked Gray defeated Baptista after Baptista was forced to retire. Nuñez defeated Hing, 6-0 and 6-1, at the No. 4 spot.  In the No. 1 singles match, No. 42 Rybakov knocked off the No. 119 ranked Kilani, 6-1 and 6-4, clinching the 4-0 victory for the Horned Frogs.

With today's action in the books, Tulsa is 7-9 on the season. The Golden Hurricane returns to action Friday, March 9, as the No. 15 ranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State come to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. First serves are scheduled for 2 p.m.
