TULSA, Okla. — Shelby Estocado extended her hitting streak to 12 games, but Drake topped Tulsa, 7-2, on Thursday night at the Collins Family Softball Complex in the home opener for the Golden Hurricane.
Estocado went 1-for-3 and singled in her final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh to extend the streak. Julia Hollingsworth also went 1-for-3 to push her hitting streak to 11 games, while Morgan Neal went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Golden Hurricane (12-8), who saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.
Meanwhile, Sarah Maddox homered for the Bulldogs (13-7) and Kailee Smith allowed a run over five innings for the victory.
Drake took a 4-0 lead with two unearned runs in the third followed by a run in the fourth and another in the fifth.
TU got on the board in the bottom of the inning, which started with singles from Sarah Briers and Hollingsworth. Neal then dropped down a perfect bunt that went for a hit to load the bases. Estocado lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field that got the Hurricane on the board, but Smith got the next two batters to fly out and end the inning.
Drake then scored three runs in the top of the sixth to jump ahead 7-1. That's where the score stood going into the bottom of the seventh.
Hollingsworth walked to start the frame before Estocado extended her streak with a single down the left-field line. With one out, both runners moved to scoring position on a wild pitch and Haley Meinen brought home a run with a fielder's choice.
However, that would be all the Hurricane would manage as the Bulldogs closed out the inning for the 7-2 final score.
Tulsa will head to the Jayhawk Invitational, March 9-11, in Lawrence, Kan., and will open the event against Green Bay on Friday.
